Big East Expansion: Predicting How Many Big East Teams Will Be Relevant in 2013

The Big East is set to introduce Boise State, San Diego State, Central Florida, Houston and Southern Methodist as new additions to the conference in 2013. So which of these schools will actually be relevant in football at that time?

Even projecting next year’s teams would be difficult but it ultimately comes down to whether or not the schools can keep the coaches. According to multiple reports, SMU’s June Jones will be the new coach at Arizona State, Houston’s Kevin Sumlin has interviewed for multiple positions and Chris Petersen is one of the hottest commodities in the game.

These coaches really built the programs to what they are right now and would continue to have them going in the right direction. UCF was looking in the right direction last year but lost six games by seven or less points including every road game on the schedule and San Diego State managed to go 8-4 this season despite losing its head coach to Michigan.

From a conservative standpoint, only Boise State will likely be relevant in 2013 but there is a chance that all of these schools could be relevant at that time. It all comes down to whether or not the coaches stay put.
