EPL 2011: Arsene Wenger Hints at New Faces After City Defeat

Arsenal manger Arsene Wenger has given his clearest indication that he may add new players to his current squad when the January transfer window opens.

Arsenal only lost by a marginal score of 1-nil to Manchester City at the Ethad Stadium on Dec. 18, in what many would call the game of the season. In an end-to-end encounter in which both teams set out to attack, it was midfield maestro David Silva who got the telling touch to score the winning goal.

This leaves the Gunners far from City in the race for the title and Wenger has all but conceded the title. Despite having players such as Wilshere and Diaby coming back through injury, the Gunners boss has set his sights on some transfer targets.

Speaking to Arsenal.com after the game, Wenger said: "We hope to have Wilshere and Diaby back so in midfield we have the numbers required. But at the moment we are short at the back and if Gervinho and Chamakh go to the Africa Cup of Nations we are short up front more than midfield."

In recent weeks, Arsenal have been heavily linked with potential strikers, with Podolski the name popping up. It is believed that, amongst Arsenal fans, Podolski would be the perfect January signing.

However, Wenger swiftly denied any interest in the player on Sky Sports News. But the manager always keeps cards close to his chest with signing players, so you never know. Another player that Arsenal are tracking is Anderlecht forward Matias Suarez, whose current deal expires in June 2013, according to recent reports

But Wenger has yet to fully rule out a loan move for Thierry Henry.

The Gunners will be in desperate measures if Gervinho and Chamakh go to the Africans Cup of Nations. Gervinho is a key member of the squad and creates all sorts of problems for the opposition. Arshavin and Walcott are drifting a little bit, and Wenger needs reassurance that anyone he can put on will change the game.

Park Chu-Young will be hoping for a run in the team so he can finally state what he can do on the pitch. And from what we've already seen, he could be a more talented and effective player than the likes of Arshavin, Rosicky and Chamakh.
