Every week when the updated BCS Rankings are released, there is always controversy across the nation with particulars in the placement of certain teams.
In the college football world every single week matters.
Some feel that this is good for the sport. There is a tension in every single game all year. One loss can eliminate a team's dream for a berth in the National Championship game.
Others feel that it limits the potential for big games. In Week 1, half of the teams across the nation lose. That means that after just one week, most of these teams have no hope of playing in the big game.
That just doesn't seem fair. In a way, it really eliminates the hype for the entire season after just one loss.
Every year when the season comes down to the wire, there seems to be some sort of controversy in who deserves a shot at the National Championship.
Obviously only two teams can play, but sometimes there are many more that are deserving. That is the case this year.
The No. 1 LSU Tigers are one of two remaining undefeated teams this season.
They are the one team that appears to be a lock for the big game.
Well, at least for the time being.
At 2:30 p.m. ET they are scheduled to take on No. 3 Arkansas, who is sitting with a 10-1 record.
There is already controversy surrounding the No. 2 spot in the country. Imagine what will happen if the Razorbacks can pull off an upset this afternoon.
LSU, Arkansas, Alabama, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech, Stanford and Boise State will all be on equal ground with one total loss on the season.
We can't forget Houston, who is actually undefeated, but doesn't get as much attention due to the strength of their schedule.
No matter which two teams are selected as the top two in the country, there is going to be an uproar and a strong case for each of the other teams.
The idea of a college football playoff system has been around for awhile. If Arkansas wins this game, the uproar for the system will be stronger than ever.
Even if they lose, the controversy will still be there. It's unclear which team deserves the No. 2 ranking regardless.
It's a system that has been talked about for years. It's one that has been needed for years.
A three week, eight team playoff system is the answer to all the controversy that the BCS Rankings have created.
Imagine if we would have had something like this in past years.
TCU would have had the opportunity to fight for a berth in the big game last season.
Boise State may have gotten the opportunity to finally play in the National Championship after repeated seasons at the top of the rankings.
Utah finished the 2008 season as the only undefeated team. They finished No. 2 in the polls. A playoff system would have at least given them a chance.
The undefeated Auburn Tigers of 2004 would have finished the season ranked No. 3. However, they could have still fought through a playoff system to play in the National Championship.
I'll be pulling for Arkansas this afternoon.
It's not because I like the Razorbacks. It's not because I dislike the Tigers.
It's because I'm a fan of college football. Hopefully a result like this will make the need for a playoff system more prevalent than ever before.
