Following last week’s surprise announcement of Jeff Fisher and the Tennessee Titans parting ways, the Titans may look to hire a coach from within the organization.
The biggest need for the team right now is stability, and bringing in an outside coach would only stir the pot up. If the Titans do decide to hire a current Titans coach, here is a list of three guys who are the main candidates.
Mike Heimerdinger, Offensive Coordinator
Heimerdinger had been a coordinator with the Tennessee Titans since 2000 before taking the same job with the New York Jets in 2005. He then rejoined the Titans in 2008 and has been the coordinator since. His knowledge of the team and tenure makes him a perfect candidate for stability.
This season Heimerdinger had the No. 1 offense in the NFL before he was diagnosed with cancer. Between chemotherapy and Vince Young having a breakdown, the high-powered offense slowly faded into one of the league's worst.
If the Titans and Heimerdinger both believe he is healthy enough to take on the stress of an NFL head coach, he could very well get the job.
Dave McGinnis, Assistant Head Coach/Linebacker Coach
McGinnis is the only current Titans assistant coach with any experience as a head coach. From 2001-2003, McGinnis was the head coach of the Cardinals, but didn’t have a single winning season.
If stability is all the Titans are looking for, McGinnis is a great candidate because of his role as the assistant head coach. However, if the Titans are looking to win, McGinnis would be a gamble.
Mike Munchak, Offensive Line Coach
The Houston Oilers selected Munchak with the eighth overall pick in the 1982 draft. He played 11 years for the Oilers, racking up nine pro bowl appearances and an NFL Hall of Fame induction.
After he retired in 1993, he became a quality control coach before eventually becoming an offensive line coach for the Tennessee Titans. After spending well over half of his life with the Titans, Munchak is probably the most loyal Titans fan in Tennessee.
On top of everything else, everyone in the Titans organization loves Munchak. This would make the transition easy, as everyone would jump on board with his game plan immediately. Munchak is the most likely of the three to be the next head coach.
