Rafael Nadal has already proven he is the best clay court player of this era, but taking a seventh title at Roland Garros would be a feat worthy of calling him the best ever. Nadal has won 93 percent of his career matches on clay, and 35 singles titles.
That is simply ridiculous.
Bjorn Borg has long been thought of as the king of the clay, but I think the time has come to pass the crown.
(Too young to remember Borg? Here is a taste of classic tennis action, your welcome.)
Rafa will pass the clay-court legend with his seventh title, and in my opinion this feat is enough to sway the debate in Nadal's favor. Borg hung up his tennis shoes earlier than many thought he would (two months shy of his 27th birthday), and that leaves us to wonder how many more titles he could have won.
Nadal is leaving nothing to our imagination. His greatness is real and he is primed to accomplish the amazing feat during the career of one of the sport's all-time greats in Roger Federer, and over the current world No. 1 in Novak Djokovic.
I contend part of greatness is longevity, and the 26-year-old is two matches away from his seventh title at Roland Garros. The fact that he's playing as well now as he ever has makes it easy to forecast more French Open titles
It's not even just that he is presumably winning the title this year, it's how he's doing it. He is eradicating his competition.
Rafa has yet to drop a set at the 2012 French Open, and he holds a 16-4 lifetime record against his next opponent, David Ferrer. He will face what could be a tired winner of the Djokovic-Federer semi-final match if he defeats Ferrer.
The winner will have endured a tough battle in the semis, and both Fed and Djoker have struggled to make it this far. Things look promising for Nadal and the seventh title seems almost inevitable.
When it happens, let us all acknowledge the best that ever did it on the shale, stone or brick.
