College Football Rankings: Boise State and 3 Overrated Teams in Week 6 Polls

One of my biggest problems with the way college football polls work is how long the preseason rankings hold their weight. The best example of that in 2011 is Boise State. The Broncos only hold one good win, over Georgia who has since fallen from the polls, but is ranked higher than teams with bigger victories on their résumés.

So, here are three teams that are ranked too high in the Week 6 rankings.

No. 5 Boise State Broncos

I've always sided with Boise State for the same reason so many other people do–they are the perpetual underdog. And even though it really isn't the Broncos fault that no big programs want to schedule them with the fear of losing, you can't warrant a top-five spot based on what they've done this season.

Boise doesn't have another ranked team left on the schedule, which will make it difficult for them to prove to voters how good they really are. There's still a lot of football to be played, but it would be interesting to see if the BCS would favor a one-loss major conference team or an undefeated Broncos squad with a weak schedule.

Where they should be ranked: No. 8

No. 9 Oregon Ducks

While the Ducks have an awesome offense, when they went up against LSU's equally good defense it only managed to put up 27 points. After picking up three straight wins they are back in the top 10, even without the benefit of a marquee victory.

Oregon's defense continues to be a concern after giving up 31 to unranked Arizona. We know they can destroy inferior schools, but can they hang with an elite team? Until that question is answered they should be outside the top 10.

Where they should be ranked: No. 11

No. 17 Florida Gators

After four wins to start the season, Florida was given a wake-up call by Alabama on Saturday. The Crimson Tide had no problem running past the Gators thanks to Trent Richardson. A loss like that proves Florida is only a fringe ranked team.

They'll have another chance to prove themselves next week but could be without quarterback John Brantley, who left the Alabama game with a leg injury. If they get clobbered again next week, they should fall out of the rankings, even after a good start.

Where they should be ranked: No. 23
