If BYU Remains Independent, Its Schedule Must Improve

Rumors mixed with semi-dependable news sources say the Big 12 is standing firm at 10 teams if Missouri decides to stick around another year and Oklahoma or Oklahoma State don't get antsy and decide PAC-12 membership shines brighter than the Big 12's status quo.

OK, enough of the woulda, coulda, shouldas of conference realignment.

BYU was either not invited or didn't accept.  Either way, BYU is still independent in 2011, and looks to be so in 2012 and beyond.

So if independence is the Cougars' fate, the one thing they can control that will make independence a positive for the Church, School and Team is to create a competitive schedule that meets the needs of the Church (teams across the nation to increase the Church's visibility), the School (teams from schools that BYU needs and wants to form academic relationships), and the Team (teams that are capable of challenging BYU and when success is realized, that the team is able to gain national recognition resulting in better recruiting, better TV placement, and better postseason play).

This can be accomplished by focusing on three areas:

1.  Identify geographic areas where BYU wants to enhance its visibility.

2.  Identify teams in which competitive rivalries can be created.

3.  Find ways BYU can further an opposing team's goals.
