Week 5 Fantasy Football Waiver-Wire Pickups: Laurent Robinson Due for a Decline

Roughly 20 minutes into Sunday's contest between the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys, it looked like Dez Bryant was well on his way to being Dallas' leading receiver for the day.

Instead, it was...Laurent Robinson?

Yes, Laurent Robinson. He came out of nowhere to haul in seven catches for 116 yards, making him one of the most productive wide receivers in fantasy.

It's just too bad that very, very few owners actually benefited from Robinson's big day, as he was owned in roughly .0000000001 percent of fantasy leagues.

Or some such number. At any rate, a performance like his begs the question whether or not he's worth picking up. If Robinson can have one big day, might he have a few more before the end of the season?

From where I'm sitting, the answers to these questions are no and no.

No thanks to Eric Decker, I'm a little cautious of connecting the word "fluke" with the words "wide receiver," but that's what Robinson was on Sunday. He had a good game, but there's very little chance that he's going to be have another just like it down the road.

The reason I say this is because Tony Romo has other weapons at his disposal in Dallas' offense. Jason Witten is as steady as they come at tight end, and he also has a pair of ultra-talented wide receivers in Bryant and Miles Austin.

Speaking of Austin, he missed his second straight game against the Lions, as he was still dealing with a hamstring injury he suffered in Week 2 at San Francisco. The word from ESPNDallas.com is that he wanted to play on Sunday, but he decided to play it safe. His absence no doubt contributed to Robinson's success.

Well, Austin will be back after Dallas' Week 5 bye, and that will push Robinson down a peg or two on the depth chart.

Don't get me wrong, Robinson has talent. For all I know, he's a scholar and a gentleman too. I'm just not sure he's a reliable fantasy option, and I don't think you should gamble on him being one.

And from the look of things, few of you are. At last check, Robinson is owned in just two percent of Yahoo! leagues and 0.2 percent of ESPN leagues.

To be honest, I'm surprised those numbers aren't higher.

Then again, they are up a bit from .0000000001 percent.
