WWE Vengeance 2011: John Cena Loss Will Open Door for CM Punk, More Contenders

Most cynical WWE fans probably expect John Cena to defeat WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio at Vengeance on Sunday in a Last Man Standing match, capturing his 11th WWE Championship in the process.

I believe that the announcement of a Last Man Standing match actually improves Del Rio's chances of victory astronomically, though. If Cena was truly going to win, then he probably would have chosen an I Quit match since his character in incapable of quitting.

The Last Man Standing stipulation works in Del Rio's favor, though, as he can use every weapon and dirty trick in the book to incapacitate. More than likely somebody will interfere on Del Rio's behalf and will help him put Cena down for the 10 count.

If that does indeed happen, then it will probably be time to move Del Rio into another feud since this is Cena's guaranteed rematch. There doesn't seem to be an overwhelming crop of face contenders, but the creative team will have to figure something out.

Here are three superstars who I believe are the three most likely contenders for a shot at the WWE Championship should Del Rio retain at Vengeance.

Big Show

Big Show likely isn't on the radar of most in terms of being a contender for the WWE Championship as he is challenging Mark Henry for the World Heavyweight Championship at Vengeance. I fully expect Big Show's attempt at his own form of vengeance to fall short, though, meaning he will likely have to move on to another feud.

Although you may not realize it, Big Show is actually technically a member of the RAW roster, so he could very well go back to competing exclusively on RAW after he finishes up with Henry. Just prior to his feud with Henry over the summer, Big Show was involved in a short feud with Del Rio in which Ricardo Rodriguez hit him with a car.

Del Rio beat Big Show at Capitol Punishment with help from Henry so there was never a proper end to the feud. Because of that the rivalry could easily be rehashed as Big Show moves onto the next stop on his redemption tour. I doubt Big Show would win, but the feud could give Del Rio a nice feather in his cap.

Triple H

Triple H may no longer be a full-time wrestler, but he proved that he has plenty of gas left in the tank in his match with CM Punk at Night of Champions. He also is scheduled to team with Punk at Vengeance against the team of The Miz and R-Truth.

I expect Triple H and Punk to lose that match due to interference from John Laurinaitis and perhaps a returning Kevin Nash whom Triple H put out of commission with a sledgehammer shot at Night of Champions. This would officially reveal that Laurinaitis is in cahoots with Awesome Truth and worked to sabotage Triple H.

It is also a distinct possibility that Laurinaitis and co. will recruit Del Rio by helping him defeat Cena in the Last Man Standing match. This would lend credence to the newly-formed heel group as it would be in possession of the WWE Championship. This might compel Triple H to want to cut the head off the serpent so to speak by challenging Del Rio for the title.

CM Punk

The most likely scenario in my mind is CM Punk re-entering the main event scene to challenge for Del Rio's WWE Championship. Since initially losing the title at SummerSlam where Del Rio cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, Punk hasn't received a true rematch.

Cena was instead given a rematch and has been feuding with Del Rio ever since. It is true that Punk got another title shot in the triple-threat cell match at Hell in a Cell, but that is far different from receiving a real one-on-one championship opportunity.

With essentially every wrestling fan wanting to see Punk firmly entrenched in the main-event scene, he makes the most sense as Del Rio's next opponent. If Del Rio does, in fact, join up with Laurinaitis, then it would still make sense from Punk's perspective as he dislikes Laurinaitis and Awesome Truth.

Whatever the case, Punk would seem to be the clear choice and it would surely be a crowd-pleasing move whether he ultimately captures the title or not.
