There weren’t too many players that struggled as mightily as Chone Figgins last year. While Adam Dunn thinks he knocked the cover off the ball, the rest of us were disgusted by his .188 batting average and .484 OPS.
He dealt with a hip injury last year and was limited to 81 games, but those numbers are inexcusable.
This is a .280 career hitter though. Why wouldn’t you expect him to bounce back?
For starters, he has hit .236 in his two years with the Mariners. Obviously last year was a disaster, but he hit just .259 in 2010.
His injury hindered his ability to steal bases, which has long been his main benefit to fantasy owners. He had just 11 stolen bases in 81 games, which was the lowest total of his MLB career (not counting his 15-game cup of coffee in 2002).
Figgins isn’t even a lock to start. Kyle Seager has been much more effective this spring, which could land him the third base gig. Figgins could get some time in center field, but that isn’t a lock either.
Considering his struggles in Seattle, the Mariners’ poor offense, the fact that he is 34 and coming off a hip injury and that he may not have a regular spot in the lineup, make Figgins a player to ignore for now.
He has a MockDraftCentral ADP of 384 so that has pretty much tells you the whole story. If he starts off hitting the ball better and returns to form on the base paths, then he’d be worth a look. Until then, look elsewhere.
