The Seattle Seahawks reportedly really like Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill, but the team would be crazy to select him in the 2012 NFL draft.
The Seahawks own the No. 12 pick in Thursday night's draft and if Tannehill is available there's a chance the team would take the plunge with him.
Head coach Pete Carroll loves the kid and almost starts glowing when discussing his ability. That's lovely and all, but the team already invested in a quarterback this offseason.
Seattle signed free agent signal-caller Matt Flynn to a three-year, $26 million contract in March. By making that deal, the team was supposed to have signed its quarterback of the future.
Or at least of the near future.
Seattle's first-round pick should be used to fill another of the team's roster holes, of which there are plenty.
After back-to-back 7-9 seasons, the Seahawks need to add players who will contribute immediately. When you consider that he made just 19 collegiate starts, Tannehill will almost certainly sit for his first season or two in the NFL.
Carroll and general manager John Schneider both know their roster needs an edge rusher, a reliable No. 1 receiver (Sidney Rice just can't stay healthy) and some depth at linebacker.
Tannehill's raw ability might be intriguing, but Seattle has no business taking an inexperienced quarterback who will need years to develop at No. 12. The Seahawks need to improve their roster immediately, and there are plenty of options that could help now.
In a draft that is incredibly deep defensively, failing to improve the team's defensive line and linebacker corps would be almost criminal.
Especially if the reason for neglecting those spots was to take a project at quarterback.
