Could Possible Jason Terry Signing Mean the End of Ray Allen in Boston?

According to Jeff Caplan and Marc Stein of ESPN, Jason Terry is close to agreeing on a three-year deal that would land the former Sixth Man of the Year in Boston. The Celtics would likely use the full mid-level exception of $5 Million a year on Terry, which would likely mean that Terry is expected to play a large role in the C's rotation.

Ray Allen's future in Boston has yet to be decided, but if the Jason Terry deal is finalized it could change the Three Point King's outlook on the Celtics.

Doc Rivers has told Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports that he hopes to bring both Terry and Allen to Boston; he believes that the two could play very well together. Although the Celtics would love to have both players on the team in order to have a deadly force from behind the three-point land, a deal with Terry may change Allen's outlook on his former home in Boston.

Ray Allen wants to play for a team that has a chance to win a championship, and many believe that he is looking for a prominent role in the team's rotation. The Celtics would not be able to offer him the starting role, as Avery Bradley is currently their starting shooting guard.

The signing of Terry indicates that he would possibly have to split the sixth-man duties. Allen is likely to view the possible signing as an indication that he may have an even less-prominent role with the C's, and his minutes may be reduced greatly.

The Celtic's may lose Ray Allen to another team simply because he has so many options that would allow him more playing time and responsibility. Multiple sources have told ESPN that the Clippers are likely to offer Ray the full mid-level exception and the opportunity to start alongside Chris Paul.

The Miami Heat are very interested in the services of Allen and can only offer the mini mid-level exception of $3 million, but the role in South Beach would likely be that of a sixth man. The Celtics have reportedly offered Ray Allen a two-year $12 million deal, and they plan to have him play a very important reserve role that would not see too large of a decrease in playing time.

Ray Allen is visiting with the Celtics before he makes his final decision. If the C's have come to an agreement with Jason Terry at that time, Ray Allen will likely make the decision under the assumption that he will likely be playing much less than 30 minutes a game.

I think that in the end, a deal with Terry will hurt the likelihood of Ray Allen returning to Boston. But for a player that will be 37 years old in the upcoming season, it may come down to simply where he feels most comfortable.

I do believe that Ray Allen will return to Boston next season and that the Celtics will be able to sign Jason Terry as well. Familiarity and comfort will likely be the main reasons the C's will be able to retain Ray. Coupled with Doc Rivers' continuing reassurance that Allen will get the playing time he seeks, the team will work hard to make the rotation work for both Terry and Allen.

The Celtics are likely now trying to get a deal in line for Terry, because they will not even be meeting with Allen until late in free agency. Having one of the reserve guards will secure some level of production at the reserve shooting guard position. Having both would make the C's one of the deepest teams at the guard positions.
