As usual, the Senior Bowl is loaded with sought after NFL draft prospects, and many defensive studs in the 2012 class will look to make their way up team's draft boards during this week's showcase.
Let's take a look at which three defenders have the best chance to improve their draft stock this week in Mobile.
Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina
Ingram is an interesting prospect due to his size.
He measured in 6'1'' and 276 pounds at the weigh-in today, making him a "tweener" prospect or more affectionately, a "hybrid" defensive end/outside linebacker.
I like Ingram as a hand-on-the-ground defensive end, preferably in a 4-3 scheme.
The South Carolina star does everything on the field with a great sudden aggressiveness and is a special athlete for his size.
He can make plays against the run from the backside and is powerful and quick getting around offensive tackles on his way to the quarterback.
Ingram should have an impressive week both in the practice drills and in the game itself. He's a dynamic playmaker with first-round ability.
Zach Brown, LB, North Carolina
He's fighting with Nebraska's Lavonte David (also participating) as the best 4-3 outside linebacker in the 2012 class. He stands 6'1'' and weighs 238 pounds. As we've seen from many of the recent North Carolina draftees, Brown is incredibly gifted athletically with great speed, shiftiness and strength to get off blocks.
He'll have a chance to "wow" scouts and coaches with his quickness in pursuit and pass-rushing ability.
During his time in college, he did have the tendency to over-pursue the ball-carriers and almost was taken out of the plays because he got to the spot too soon.
Brown will need to show more awareness and discipline this week, but has all the physical tools.
Alamed Ta' Amu, DT, Washington
Ta' Amu had somewhat of a disappointing end to the season, as he wasn't especially impactful in the Huskies' final four games, outside of a good effort against the lowly Washington State Cougars.
LSU's defensive tackle Michael Brockers made news with his surprise entry in this year's draft, so Ta' Amu has become, in some people's opinion, the third- or fourth-best interior defensive line prospect.
He's a load in the middle at 6'2'' and 341 pounds and is a nose tackle that commands double teams on most snaps, especially on running downs.
If he can disrupt some plays in the backfield during the exhibition game and isn't consistently stymied by guards and centers, this Washington product could be a late-first round pick.
Everyone's looking for that next Vince Wilfork or Haloti Ngata—can you blame them?
