The Los Angeles Angels handed the Oakland A's their third consecutive loss on Monday, with a stellar pitching performance from Jered Weaver.
Weaver recorded his 1,000th strikeout and helped provide the goose egg in a 6-0 loss where the A's failed to get 10 hits for the 11th game in a row, which is now a franchise record to start the season.
The game was basically decided in the top of the first, with A's starter Brandon McCarthy giving up three runs on four hits, which included Kendrys Morales's first home run since May of 2010.
It was the same old story for Oakland. No hitting! Weaver (2-0) gave up just five hits over 6.2 innings and the Angels bullpen only allowed one more hit the rest of the game.
Jemile Weeks and Coco Crisp the A's one and two hitters were a combined 0-8. If the A's are going to get anything going on offense this season, Weeks .196 and Crisp's .146 batting averages have to change in a hurry.
The A's did have a few opportunities even without production from the top two spots in the lineup, but the A's squandered any chances of taking advantage by going 0-8 with runners in scoring position.
Cuban Newcomer Yoenis Cespedes had the night off as Coco Crisp started in Center Field and Seth Smith got the nod in left field.
The Angels first runs came on Morales's three-run homer to center field, just clearing the fence and Crisp's glove in the bottom of the first. Howie Kendrick and Albert Pujols both singled in the inning, setting the table for Morales.
Pujols was 2-4 and Morales was 3-4 with 4 RBI.
The three runs in the first would prove to be all the Angels would need.
The A's were blanked for the second time in three games.
