Mario Gutierrez showed the poise and strategy typically reserved for veteran Kentucky Derby jockeys as he skillfully worked his horse, I'll Have Another, over to the rail and plotted the perfect time to make his charge.
Gutierrez is anything but a veteran Kentucky Derby jockey, though. This was his first Run for the Roses, and it was an improbable one.
Along with the fact that Gutierrez was an event rookie was the fact that I'll Have Another was never considered to be one of the stronger horses in the field, and he was stuck in exile in the 19th post. No horse had ever won the Derby from that post.
All of this combined to have I'll Have Another leaving the gate as a 15-1 underdog.
Not a problem for this fantastic duo. Neither was the fact that Bodemeister flashed out of the gate and opened up an early lead.
Bodemeister was lightning. He set the fastest time ever for this grand race in the first five splits, but that didn't faze either I'll Have Another or his jockey.
They simply ran their race, and hung out around fifth place until they made the final turn.
It was then that he slid out to the outside and began charging as Bodemeister began to slightly fade. And that was all the eventual champ needed to win by a length at Churchill Downs.
It was a fantastic late charge by Mario Gutierrez in an entertaining 2012 Kentucky Derby.
