2011 NFL Draft: Jake Locker Continuing To Struggle Should Be A Red Flag
So if you listen to and read the reports out of Mobile this week, then Jake Locker is doing what Jake Locker normally does: be inconsistent.
This is supposed to be the guy who was going to be the No. 1 overall pick last year?
I was never really impressed with Locker even before last year. In the limited times I saw him play, he was a quarterback who relied too much on his athleticism and never really developed as a passer despite his big arm. Now after passing up the Draft last year, the scouts are starting to see that as well and with that, his draft stock is falling faster than Enron's.
Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Mallett and Cam Newton have all surpassed him (albeit it's a weak quarterback class), and I could see a possibility where Locker could even fall into the second round. Rob Rang of CBSSports.com wrote something to the effect of Locker might be too inconsistent to be a successful NFL quarterback, and it's becoming more and more obvious that scouts are starting to side with him.
Somewhere in northern California, Andrew Luck has to be paying attention to this, right?
Luck made the same decision Locker did, and he has to be watching how Locker's struggling. Of course, the saving grace for Luck is he's a much better quarterback than Locker is.
But perhaps this should be a warning for Luck: Funny how much difference a year makes.
