Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals. The deal is finally done. The Philadelphia Eagles acquire Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, an extremely athletic, but sometimes unreliable cornerback, plus a second round pick. Nice haul for a backup!
Check it out, via ProFootballTalk:
Adam Caplan of FOXSports.com reports Kolb is headed to Arizona in exchange for a second-round pick and 2009 Pro Bowl cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
That?s a ton to give up for an unproven quarterback, but the Cardinals were only getting started betting their future on Kolb. Caplan reports Kolb will sign a five-year, $63 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.
This isn't surprising news in the least, but those initial contract numbers certainly are surprising.
I mean, $63 million for a backup! Yeah, he had himself a nice run for a few starts here and there. But that is a ton of money for a team that might have been better off spending it to fill the myriad of holes they have on offense and defense.
One thing is certain, though, the Arizona Cardinals are back.
Two years after making the Super Bowl, the Cardinals are back in the cellar of the NFL. Once quarterback Kurt Warner retired, there was a big problem in the desert: no quarterback.
And everyone who watches the NFL knows that without a quarterback, you don't stand a chance. With that in mind, Arizona made it their mission to acquire the intriguing gun-slinger from the Philadelphia Eagles.
For fantasy purposes, Larry Fitzgerald will once again become a god. For real life purposes, he will once again become relevant in the top wide receiver in the NFL discussion. Either way, he wins.
While the price was large, fans in Arizona should be celebrating right now.
The Seattle Seahawks are without a quarterback after trading Matt Hasselbeck, so the Cardinals are now the NFC West's team to beat.
As for the Philadelphia Eagles, this was a very high risk/reward move. If Michael Vick stays healthy, a huge if, then this deal was perfect. If not, the Eagles are screwed. Simple as that.
So Philadelphia fans? You better start praying.
Because if Vick gets injured for even three games, the Eagles are going to have a hell of a hard time making the playoffs in the talent-loaded NFC East.
