Today, Cincinnati Reds GM Walt Jocketty announced the departure of 30-year-old left fielder Jonny Gomes.
Speculation and talk of a Gomes-involved trade had been swirling about for a while. Today, a little under a week away from the trade deadline, the Reds and Washington Nationals made something happen.
Most rumors pointed towards the Atlanta Braves being the main suitors for Gomes' bat, so the trade came as a slight surprise. Jonny will help give the Nationals a solid right-handed platoon bat to go in left field. Coincidentally enough, he will be pairing up with his Reds' platoon partner of years past, Laynce Nix. Thus continuing the trend of Washington serving as a retirement home for Reds' players in their waning years.
In exchange, the Reds received two middling prospects in left-handed pitcher Chris Manno and outfielder Bill Rhinehardt. Manno has put up respectable numbers thus far in his minor league career. Rhinehardt, while a tad old at 26, might prove to have some utility given that he has already hit 21 home runs to this point in the season down in Double-A.
The move freed up a roster spot for the Reds to correspondingly promote young LF Yonder Alonso from Triple-A Louisville. On the season, Alonso's been sporting a sterling slash line of .296/.374/.486. This move probably couldn't have come at a better time, given the erratic nature of the Reds' offense.
