Mayweather vs. Ortiz: 3 Reasons Tonight's Fight Won't Go the Distance

Mayweather vs. Ortiz has been hyped for months as the biggest boxing event of the year, and for many reasons it should be.

The most important, is that for the first time in years there is anticipation in the boxing world.

Think back to the last boxing event that you were really looking forward to? Who was fighting? How long ago was it?

For most people, it has been several years since anything in the boxing world has been remotely intriguing.

Tonight, when Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO) meets Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO) in the ring, there will be more eyes on a boxing match than there has been in a long time.

Will those eyes stay glued for the entire 12 rounds? I doubt it.

Here are three reasons that tonight's bout will not go the distance.

1. Mayweather's Absence From the Ring

I don't care who the fighter is, a 16-month absence from the ring is going to be an obstacle to overcome.

It may be an obstacle that Mayweather is better at overcoming, but it is an obstacle nonetheless.

Most people who don't fight can't understand, but being in shape for a 12-round fight and being prepared for a 12-round fight are two very different things.

Chances are, Mayweather is prepared. This is just something to keep in the back of your head.

2. Ortiz is a Power Puncher

As can be seen by his record, Ortiz ends most of his fights by knockout.

Both fighters weighed in yesterday, meeting the 147 pound requirement. The difference, is that Ortiz will likely have 10 pounds on Mayweather when the fight actually begins.

During Ortiz's last fight against Andre Berto he met the same 147 pound requirement at weigh in. By the time the fight started, Ortiz had rehydrated to 161 pounds. Expect a very similar shift in weight for tonight's fight.

That 10-pound edge will give Ortiz some extra power to his punch. He will be swinging early and often to get Mayweather on the mat.

3. Decision Means a Loss for Ortiz

Mayweather is possibly the greatest defensive tactician in the history of boxing. Mayweather has only ever been down once officially, when he took a knee from the pain of breaking his hand.

Mayweather makes guys miss and counters until they go down.

If this fight goes the distance, Ortiz is going to get out-boxed. He likely knows that a decision means a loss.

For that reason, Ortiz will leave it all in the ring tonight going for the knockout.

That doesn't mean he will get it. After wearing himself down all fight, expect Mayweather to capitalize and knock out Ortiz somewhere around the 10th round.
