With a 49ers victory against the Cardinals on Sunday, I’m back on the winning side of things in ESPN's Eliminator Challenge. Alex Smith had two touchdown passes, and the Niners defense stifled the Cards in a 23-7 victory.
It was hardly a surprise, as the 49ers and Green Bay Packers are looking like they might be destined for an NFC Championship matchup.
The most popular pick of the past weekend was the New England Patriots, who were not challenged by the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night. The Pats won, 34-3.
Thursday night provided another chapter of Tim Tebow folklore as the Broncos upset the Jets.
I recommended not picking against Tebow, and he provided the late heroics once again with a 20-yard touchdown run for the game-winning score. About 13 percent of entries incorrectly selected the Jets with their Week 11 pick.
I predicted that the Panthers would play the Lions close behind their Cam Newton-led offense.
With five minutes left to play, Newton ran in from six yards out to knot the score at 35. The Lions, however, continued to show that they are a second-half team. They survived their shootout with the Panthers, 49-35.
The Buffalo Bills continued their slide against the streaking Miami Dolphins, as they lost 35-8.
The Bills have lost their last three, while the Dolphins have won their last three. Miami started the season 0-7. The Bills had about five percent of selections.
While I’m no longer in the running for the top prize with one loss, my personal entry is still in the 99.7th percentile.
Here are my picks through Week 11:
Week 1: San Diego Chargers
Week 2: New York Giants
Week 3: Dallas Cowboys
Week 4: Green Bay Packers
Week 5: New Orleans Saints
Week 6: Cincinnati Bengals
Week 7: Carolina Panthers
Week 8: Tennessee Titans
Week 9: Houston Texans
Week 10: Baltimore Ravens (loss)
Week 11: San Francisco 49ers
With no team being picked on more than 12 percent of entries, there is an unusually even spread of picks across teams in Week 12.
The Dallas Cowboys are hot and playing at home in their annual Thanksgiving game. They are receiving about 11 percent of selections.
However, they are facing the equally hot Miami Dolphins. Both teams have won their past three contests. While I like the Cowboys in this matchup, I would hardly consider it a lock.
The Cincinnati Bengals are hosting the Cleveland Browns in what could turn out to be a laugher. The Browns have broken the 20-point barrier only one time this season! The Bengals, on the other hand, are averaging 23.6 points per game.
One of the strangest situations of the eliminator season involves the Carolina Panthers facing the Indianapolis Colts. About 10 percent of entries are predicting the Indianapolis Colts will win their first game of the season. Meanwhile, eight percent of entries are taking the Carolina Panthers.
It’s very odd to see two teams playing against each other in the top five selections.
The Panthers may be 2-8, but they have a dynamic offense. The Colts have the 31st ranked rush defense in the league, which does not bode well against the league's seventh-best rushing offense in Carolina.
I’d confidently take Carolina in this matchup, but that can't be my pick, as I used Carolina in Week 7.
I’m looking at the Atlanta Falcons hosting the Minnesota Vikings.
Adrian Peterson is questionable for the Vikings, and Christian Ponder is still making questionable decisions in the passing game as he becomes accustomed to life as an NFL quarterback.
Matt Ryan has been solid for the Falcons at QB. The Falcons also boast the No. 2 rush defense in the league.
I expect a comfortable win for the Falcons even if Adrian Peterson plays in this one.
