Which Team Will Look to Add Willie Green in 2011-12?

Willie Green is currently an unrestricted free agent after spending one year in New Orleans. Previously, Green spent seven years with the Philadelphia 76ers where he was a one-time starter but was later moved to a bench role. After a collegiate career at Detroit-Mercy where Green was an outstanding player, he was drafted by the Seattle Sonics in the 2003 NBA Draft before being traded on draft night to Philadelphia.

During the first four years in Philadelphia, Green improved his scoring average almost every year and averaged a career-high 12.4 points while playing 26.6 minutes per game and starting 74 games in 2007-08.

However, after the 2007-08 NBA season, Green became more of a role player but remained a professional and was able to find minutes. The 76ers had a logjam at the guard position, so there were not so many minutes to go around.

Green also was an important player for the 76ers during their playoff runs in 2008 and 2009, as he was one of the veteran players on the team and helped out with the scoring and being a leader to the younger players in the locker room. However, Green found himself with a new team along with Jason Smith after being traded to the New Orleans Hornets.

Green got the opportunity to play on a team that was looking to add some depth at the shooting guard position while the 76ers acquired a young big man in Craig Brackins, who was entering his rookie season, along with veteran Darius Songaila.

In his lone season as a member of the New Orleans Hornets, Green averaged 8.7 points while appearing in 77 regular season games. He also appeared in six playoff games, averaging 5.7 points per game. He was a role player for the Hornets, and was able to make the most out of the situation, which should help him find his next employer come free agency.

Green is a decent shooter and an underrated defender that is most suitable for a bench role even though he can start games. Additionally, since he is not as likely to receive a maximum contract, there may be more suitors willing to bring him on board.
