After a pretty clear and dominant win over Johny Hendricks, Rick Story's star began to rise and only came to a slight halt by some deja-vu in the form of an equally-clear decision loss to Charlie Brenneman this past June.
Story may have a chance to prove he's still a huge threat sometime later this year, but when he beat Hendricks at the TUF 12 Finale, one would think Hendricks would have been closer to permanent irrelevancy than the upper echelon, right?
Wrong.
As a matter of fact, that knockout win over TJ Waldberger at UFC Fight Night 24 was a win that Hendricks needed in order to maintain his spot as one of the top, young welterweights in the division right now, alongside Brenneman, Story, Rory MacDonald and John Hathaway, but he got it.
Does that make Hendricks a huge threat at 170 pounds?
If it doesn't, I would like to know if it's possible to be a huge threat.
Let real recognize real for a minute: Hendricks is no ordinary wrestler by any stretch of the subconcious mind.
If you take the time to look at his record, the man has only left it to the judges four times, and he's won by the judges three times.
However, he finished six fights by knockout, and thus far he's ducked no one.
Mike Pierce should keep this in mind, as he faces Hendricks tomorrow night at UFC 133.
Hendricks faces another wrestler, who much like him, prefers the finish in his fights and does a convincing job in doing so.
However, Hendricks is equally well-rounded, and if he continues on this hot streak he might as well be a shoe-in as the next opponent of Thiago Alves, the winner of next weekend's Chris Lytle-Dan Hardy bout at UFC on Versus 5, Jon Fitch or the winner of Carlos Condit-BJ Penn at UFC 137.
Mark my words if you haven't yet: Johny Hendrick may have lost to a stronger, hungrier fighter a few months ago, but if he beats Pierce, there will no longer be doubts that Hendricks is still arguably the UFC's top Welterweight prospect.
