NFL Preview: Colts Looking for First Win of the Season Against Jaguars This Week

The Colts have had the Jaguars’ number, but can Indianapolis use Jacksonville to help them achieve their first win?

Jacksonville could use a win in the worst way, and with the Colts struggling, this Sunday’s matchup in Indianapolis just might be a great opportunity for the Jaguars to get a large monkey off their backs.

The Colts have won 15 of 20 all-time meetings with Jacksonville, including eight of 10 in Indianapolis. Jacksonville last won in Indianapolis in 2008.

With the Colts hosting the Jags this year, the NFL odds have listed Jacksonville as 3-point favorites, while the total (over/under) has been posted at just 37.5 points.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars are coming off their bye week, which might have come at a good time, as they have lost five of six games following a 24-14 loss at Houston. The Jags are 0-4 on the road this year, scoring just 40 points.

Jacksonville ranks eighth in the league against the pass (197 yards per game) and 11th against the run (110 ypg) while compiling 15 sacks and forcing 10 turnovers.

Paul Posluszny leads the team with 66 tackles and a sack, while Daryl Smith has 57 stops with two sacks, an interception and a forced fumble. Matt Roth has three sacks, Dwight Lowery has two interceptions and Drew Coleman has three forced fumbles.

Jacksonville’s offense has struggled, ranking 14th in rushing offense (119 ypg) but last in the passing game (124 ypg). Maurice Jones-Drew paces the run game with 740 yards and three touchdowns on 4.5 yards per carry.

Blaine Gabbert has completed 46 percent of his passes for 907 yards and five touchdowns with four interceptions, but has been sacked 19 times. Mike Thomas has caught 31 passes for 333 yards and one TD.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts fell to 0-9 after a 31-7 home loss to Atlanta, dropping the Colts to 0-4 at home.  Before that game, the Colts had lost their home games by a total of 15 points. In five road losses, the team has been outscored by 23 points per game.

The Colts offense is definitely not the same without Peyton Manning, as it ranks just 23rd in rushing (100 ypg) and 28th in passing (183 ypg). Delone Carter and Joseph Addai anchor the running game with 570 combined yards and three touchdowns on 4.1 yards per carry.

Curtis Painter completes 53 percent of his passes for 1,221 yards and five TDs with five INTs and has been sacked 11 sacks. Pierre Garcon and Reggie Wayne are the top receivers, combining for 79 catches for 1,108 yards and five TDs.

Defensively, Indianapolis ranks 24th against the pass (260 ypg) and 31st against the run (146 ypg), compiling 13 sacks and forcing eight turnovers, with two returned for TDs (Jerraud Powers, interception; Jamaal Anderson, fumble).

Pat Angerer has 98 tackles (23 more than anyone else) with a forced fumble and fumble recovery. Dwight Freeney has 4.5 sacks with two forced fumbles.
