Since it wouldn't be practical for FC Barcelona to kick the actual Ballon d'Or around this weekend, Lionel Messi is going to celebrate winning his third straight Ballon d'Or by doing something else.
Per Yahoo! Sports, Messi is going to celebrate his successive Ballon d'Ors by wearing these cleats:

The cleats come straight from the folks at Adidas. They're typical F50 cleats, but it's plain to the naked eye that they're rather special. The gold coloring will help them stand out, as will the assorted other features. The years Messi has won the Ballon d'Or are counted off on the side, and there is a short message to be found on the inside of each shoe.
The inside of the right shoe says "FIFA Ballon d'Or Player of the Year," and the inside of the other says "Gracias a Todos." Thanks to all.

So now you know. If you happen to watch Barcelona's clash against Sevilla on Sunday, Messi will be the guy with the golden shoes—just in case you couldn't pick him out before, of course.
Truth be told, I can't say I'm a huge fan of these shoes. I'm just not a fan of anything bold or eccentric, and these shoes are both. Suffice it to say I won't be buying a pair (they're for sale for $270 on miadidas.com).
To boot, I can't say I'm a huge fan of any one player wearing his very own shoes out on the pitch. Here in the states, seemingly every player in the NBA has his own shoe, and things don't need to be getting that ridiculous out on the pitch. I fear the slippery slope.
But if there's one footballer in the world who can and should get away with having his own custom cleats, it's Messi. There really is no question that he's the best player in the world, and there's also no question that he's going to stand out no matter which game he's playing and which pitch he's standing on.
If that's going to be the case, he may as well stand out in style.
