A handful of GMs will be Plaxico Burress’d aka handcuffed this offseason.
While they’ll be able to improve their teams through the 2012 NFL Draft, salary cap woes will prevent them from making a big splash in free agency. Be patient; April is coming. Here are five teams that will be quiet early this offseason:
But the Raiders are never quiet!
Well, Reggie McKenzie doesn’t have much wiggle room in his first year in Oaktown. According to ESPN’s John Clayton, Oakland is $11 million over the cap and must get under by March 13th. Not signings, but cuts will headline the start of the Raiders' offseason.
Stanford Routt will have company soon enough.
Carolina is a young, up and coming team so building through the draft is the safest way to go. But it isn’t like the Panthers have much of a choice anyway. They are $9.6 million over the cap, and like the Raiders, have some names and numbers to erase off of their roster over the next month.
Houston doesn’t have many major holes in their depth chart so it would be surprising to see them overpay for a big-name free agent. Either way, like every other team on this list, they couldn’t even if they wanted to. The Texans have just $3.3 million in cap space.
Plus, there are these two players on their roster, Arian Foster and Mario Williams, who aren’t bad that they may just want to commit to bringing back.
After winning the Super Bowl, Tom Coughlin’s crew won’t want to shake up their core too much this offseason. Any shaking up, though, will come from players being not picked up, but dropped. New York is $7.3 million over the cap.
Even if the Steelers possessed unlimited cap room, I’m not entirely convinced that Kevin Colbert would go on a shopping spree in free agency. Pittsburgh is committed to building their franchise the right way: Through the draft. They are currently $11.7 million over, though, so a shopping spree isn’t even an option.
