Donald Brandt has a very impressive streak that not many may know about. After tonight, Brandt is 18-0 in 19 starts.
I am not quite sure what the Independent League record is for most consecutive victories without a loss, but Brandt has to be up there on the all-time list.
Last year with the Na Koa Ikaika Maui of the Golden Baseball League, Brandt put together a season worthy of pitcher of the year; 15-0, 2.58 ERA and 100 strikeouts.
Now with the St. Paul Saints of the American Association, Brandt is still undefeated and posting better numbers than last year.
In three starts with the Saints he is 3-0 in 22 innings, has 11 K’s, allowed nine hits and now posts and ERA of 0.81.
Who is this guy?
Brandt played his college ball at the University of Santa Clara where he compiled a 10-5 record. As with many “tweeners,” the Indy game is an opportunity to continue playing with the hope that a scout, any scout witnesses your talent and signs you to a minor league contract with a Major League club.
That is exactly what happened with Brandt, who caught the eye of the Milwaukee Brewers organization. His tenure was short lived (eight games), but that experience obviously taught him something.
Released by the Brewers in March of 2010, Brandt signed with Na Koa Ikaika Maui, where he began to fine tune his game and orchestrate one of the best seasons any Indy player has ever put together.
Only three games into his stint with the Saints, it appears that this 25 year old is only getting better.
In a sport dominated by stats, this is one streak definitely worth tracking.
