NBA Finals 2011: Which Miami Heat Player Will Defend Dirk Nowitzki?

NBA Finals 2011: Which Miami Heat Player Will Defend Dirk Nowitzki?

He's seven feet tall, can shoot the rock from anywhere on the floor and has proven capable of beating just about any defender thrown his way.

So what are the Miami Heat going to do? They could attempt to put Chris Bosh on him, but Bosh doesn't have the lateral quickness that's necessary to keep up with his mid-range attack. The Heat could try to put LeBron on him, but Dirk has a definitive size advantage in shooting over him.

Nowitzki presents a mismatch no matter who the team chooses to defend him, and it's going to be a problem that the Heat need to solve quickly if they want to come away as champions.

The best scenario for the Heat in their attempt to slow down Nowitzki is to use double and triple teams that force him to pass the ball into a teammate's hands.

But the work doesn't stop there. Erik Spoelstra's game plan should be to eliminate production from the Mavericks' peripheral players.

Nowitzki is going to get his no matter what, even if he's quadruple-teamed. That's just how good this guy is right now.

But if the Heat can successfully eliminate the contributions that he's received from his teammates throughout the playoff run, they'd have a much better shot at staving them off and becoming NBA champions.
