According to NJ.com , the arbitration hearing between the New Jersey Devils and Zach Parise is scheduled for August 3rd in Toronto.
The Devils filed for arbitration on June 17 so that Parise, an RFA on July 1st, wouldn?t be eligible to
receive offer sheets and possibly be lured away from New Jersey.
It?s unclear if the Devils filed for arbitration because it was insurance or if they believe that they won?t be able to re-sign the forward.
Possible explanations for not being able to re-sign Parise could be because he wants out of New Jersey or is upset with the organization since they traded captain Jamie Langenbrunner.
The Devils and Parise have yet to come to an agreement on a new deal and if they move to arbitration, the Devils will bring up his shortened 2010-11 campaign when crunching numbers. Parise and his agent will bring up his production.
Parise missed 69 games, 85 percent of this past season, but in the previous seasons he played almost completely, he was one of the league?s top producers, scoring 62, 65, 94 and 82 points between 2006-2009 seasons, including over 30 goals in each of those seasons.
Knowing the offensive support that Parise brings to the table, the Devils are obviously interested in keeping Parise long-term. Plus, Parise is active in the community and a fan favorite because of that and his on-ice production.
However, if the two sides can?t agree on a long-term contract, Parise told NJ.com that he would be willing to sign a one-year deal if it meant not requiring the scheduled arbitration hearing.
After all, negotiations are difficult enough, but arbitration is even worse, pitting player against team and potentially forever severing close relationships. It?s in both sides? best interests to make a deal? any deal?work before the arbitration deadline.
