New Jersey Nets: Deron Williams a Big Reason for Nets Struggles

Obviously, Deron Williams is the most valuable player on the New Jersey Nets. The Nets took a big risk when they traded so many pieces away in order to get Williams as the cornerstone of their team.

The Nets were willing to give up their starting point guard Devin Harris, young top draft choice Derrick Favors and multiple draft picks. There was a risk, as Williams can opt out of his contract after this season and become a free agent.

Williams has expressed interest in re-signing with the Nets if they are able to do a few things. Along with bringing in talent, the Nets need to start winning and competing. If they can prove to be competitive, then Williams will most likely stay with the team.

They have struggled to compete to start the season. At 3-10, the Nets are near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

While they are struggling because they are not equipped with much talent, their star player is not helping out much.

Williams has been inconsistent from the field this year, and those struggles were on display when he returned to Utah to play against his old team, the Utah Jazz. Williams went 3-for-15 from the field, including 1-for-4 from beyond the arc. The Nets fell to the Jazz 107-94. Much of the reason for the Nets' loss was because of "D-Will's" five turnovers and his awful 20 percent field goal percentage.

This is not something new, as he has struggled to consistently score all season.

In the Nets' victory over the Phoenix Suns, Williams was 11-for-18 from the field and scored 35 points with 14 assists. This clearly shows that the Nets go as Williams goes. When he plays well the Nets win, and when he struggles the Nets lose, plain and simple.

If he wants the Nets to compete, Williams has to consistently play well to help them compete. In the Nets' second win of the season, against the Raptors, Williams had 24 points and 9 assists.

However, in their loss to the Heat on Jan. 7, Williams struggled again from the field, hitting only four of the 16 shots that he took and ending with only 10 points. While the Nets are not on the same level right now as the Heat, they only lost by 11 points, and had Williams been more consistent they could have possibly won the game.

Williams has a 36.6 percent field goal percentage this season, which is 10 percent lower than his career average. Since joining the Nets, Williams has averaged a field goal percentage below 40.

Williams wants more talent on the Nets to compete, but he should be focusing on playing more consistently himself and maybe the Nets will start winning games more often.
