Saints vs. 49ers: Why the San Francisco 49ers Should Build Around Alex Smith

As the saying goes: no guts, no glory.

Alex Smith has shown himself to have the thickest skin of any player in the sports world. One year after hearing chants of "Carr, Carr, Carr" at Candlestick, Alex Smith came through unlike any player since Joe Montana for this heralded franchise.

He stared failure straight in the face and kicked it to the ground. He stared Drew Brees, a future Hall of Fame quarterback, in the face and came out on top.

This is a quarterback that has done something that no quarterback has ever done in the history of the league. Stink it up for six seasons before coming through in a championship moment with the very same team that had lost faith in him.

This is a storyline that best suits the likes of James Cameron and Steve Spielberg. It is a storyline that has to be considered epic by every possible definition.

No matter what happens in the NFC Championship Game or the Super Bowl, Alex Smith has proven that he isn't only the quarterback of the present for the 49ers, he is the quarterback of the future.

The team now believes in him and the players would follow him to the deep end of middle earth if he asked them to. Brotherhood in football is important and Alex Smith has the confidence of a team that continues to outperform all previous set expectations.

He might never throw for 5,000 yards or 40 touchdowns. He doesn't have the accuracy of an Aaron Rodgers, arm of Peyton Manning or physical ability of Cam Newton. But, Alex Smith has moxie. He has the "it" factor when it comes to performing when the game is on the line. This is something you either have or don't have.

Now it is time for the 49ers, no matter what happens in the remainder of the postseason, to lock up Alex Smith and give him more weapons to play with on the outside. It is still hard to believe that he came up this big on one of the largest stages that a quarterback will ever see.

And don't forget No. 11 is still only 27 years old.
