It's quite amazing that one of the most polarizing and renowned mixed martial artists on the planet is shorn of a nickname to sit nicely in between the handle of Nick Diaz.
What's even more baffling is the fact that he's acquired several welterweight championship titles—Strikeforce, WEC and IFC. Most champions in any professional combative capacity seem to have some sort of sobriquet attached to their names, but not Diaz.
Click on any link associated with the profile of the Stockton, CA native and you're likely to come up with El Diablo as his moniker. However, he has vehemently disavowed any affiliation with that nickname as was the case following his weigh-in at UFC 67.
"Diablo? Who the f*** calls me Diablo?" he said.
So, how do you pick a nickname that will be best suited to the persona and MMA exploits of one Nick Diaz?
The way to do it is to probe his overall makeup, both personally and professional, and I'm sure a moniker will crop up which might be indicative of the man.
First a look at the nicknames the Diaz haters would prefer he was addressed as.
Nick "Not Nate" Diaz: This is to differentiate between him and his younger brother Nate, supposedly.
Nick "Technical Difficulty" Diaz: Make of that what you will.
Nick "F-Bomb" Diaz: His fondness for using profanity.
Nick "Roll a blunt" Diaz: Because of his intense weed-smoking habit.
Nick "The Whiner" Diaz: When does he actually whine?
Nick "No Show" Diaz: Due to being publicity shy and more importantly because he failed to turn up for several promotional press conferences leading up to his now cancelled clash with Georges St-Pierre at UFC 137
Nick "Everybody Hates" Diaz.
Ok! Enough with the haterz.
Nick "The Pride of Stockton" Diaz: This is quite obvious.
Nick "The Stockton Bad Boy" Diaz: I doubt that requires much explanation.
Nick "Gogoplata" Diaz: I'm not too sure about this one. However, I thought it sounded cool and the fact that he submitted Takanori Gomi via said submission at Pride 33 also swayed my decision.
Nick "Tell It Like It Is" Diaz: Because he doesn't beat around the bush.
Nick "NBC or NBS" Diaz: No Bulls*** or No Bull Crap.
Nick "The Homie" Diaz: He's a homeboy.
Nick "The Running Man" Diaz: He competes in triathlons.
Nick "Don't Be Scared Homie" Diaz: It's one of the most famous sayings in all MMA as well as being über cool.
Nick "The Legend Killer" Diaz: B.J. Penn, Takanori Gomi, Hayato Sakurai and Frank Shamrock come to mind.
Nick "Nashville Brawl" Diaz.
That's all I could come up with and I'm hoping that you can do better.
Though, following his loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143 and his subsequent retirement announcement, maybe Diaz will have time on his hands to come up with what he feels is a more appropriate moniker—one that symbolizes everything Nick Diaz.
