Manchester United Transfer Rumors Center on Schalke Keeper Manuel Neuer, But Could German Really Be Next Keeper At Old Trafford?
Most of the transfer rumors surrounding the potential moves made by Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United this summer focus on one position: goalkeeper.
Understandably, this is the likely Premiership champions' biggest hole heading into the offseason, what with Edwin van der Saar retiring at age 41, and no replacement ready to go for him at this point.
Fortunately, there are several promising young keepers floating around Europe, and one of them, Shalke goalie Manuel Neuer, just happens to be nearing the end of his contract.
In fact, as recently as a week ago, reports had the Red Devils as the front-runners to acquire the 25-year-old's services. That theory was confirmed this week, as Bayern Munich, the only other real threat to United's ability to sign the promising youngster, was having difficulty negotiating a new contract with Neuer.

Per the report:
The likelihood of a transfer being agreed was dealt another blow today when German newspaper Bild quoted Rummenigge as saying: "I don't really think we are going to find a quick agreement. And I am also not convinced that Bayern and Schalke will find a price which suits them both, but we will have to wait and see ? the transfer window is still open for four more months."
While Neuer would be a welcome addition to the fold at Old Trafford, the 25-year-old isn't the only name in the mix. Hugo Lloris, the French phenom who looks to be on his way out of Lyon, is a serious contender, while Neuer's chances might be hurt by the fact that other reports believe that he wants to stay in Germany.
The fact is, both of these players, Neuer and Lloris, would be solid fits for United and as both seem unlikely to return to their current teams, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the Red Devils managed to land one of these reliable young netminders to become Old Trafford's goalkeeper of the future.
Right now, my money is on Lloris; I think he's the sharper, more potential-laden player, but Neuer has looked great this season as well, particularly in helping Schalke reach the Champions League semifinals.
