According to the Los Angeles Times Lakers Blog, Magic Johnson believes the Lakers will need to make serious changes to their roster this offseason to contend for championships in the future.
Some of Johnson’s more noteworthy comments concerned the Lakers’ big men. He went on to say the Lakers need to decide which post player they want to keep (Andrew Bynum or Pau Gasol) and trade the other one.
Johnson also suggested the Lakers should make a run at obtaining Dwight Howard in the near future, even if it meant trading Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol or Lamar Odom.
Although Johnson is considered by many to be the greatest Laker of all-time, and he has held positions in the team’s front office throughout the years, at the end of the day, he is also a fan of the team.
As all of us are aware, as sports fans, that we can become quite frustrated with our teams from time to time, as is the case right now with fans of the Lakers. After all, the team was just shockingly swept by the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference semifinals.
When I initially read the comments from Johnson, it sounded like an upset fan who is disgusted with his team’s performance. I also hoped he was speaking as an upset fan. Otherwise, I feel the comments are somewhat unwarranted.
Does anyone honestly think the Lakers need to blow up the team? A week ago, the majority of the analysts were picking the Lakers to beat the Mavericks.
This is not a team that has failed to get over the hump the last few seasons. This is a team that has been to three straight NBA Finals and has won back-to-back championships.
As far as those three are concerned, Bynum and Odom had arguably the best seasons of their careers this year, and Gasol was selected to his third straight All-Star team.
Granted, Gasol was in a major funk this postseason, but does anyone think he will spend the rest of his career playing subpar basketball?
I agree that some changes are definitely in order this off-season, especially concerning the team’s bench players and hiring a new coach.
Once again, I hope Johnson made his comments as a disappointed fan, and after the season he will have time to digest what this team has accomplished the last few seasons, and realize the team is not quite ready for the extreme makeover he suggests.
