Mariners Get Brendan Ryan in Trade

Brendan RyanThe Cardinals sent shortstop Brendan Ryan, who played most of the 2010 season with a sore wrist after surgery in spring training, to Seattle Sunday morning.

In exchange, the Mariners gave up minor league right-handed pitcher Maikel Cleto, who was 4-9 with a 6.16 ERA in 23 games (21 starts) for Single-A High Desert in the California League.

"I don't want to make excuses," Ryan said, "but having surgery two weeks before spring training definitely didn't help."

Ryan, a quality defender at shortstop who can also play second base, hit .292 in 2009 but tumbled to .223 in 2010. He was back for the end of spring training about six weeks after doctors shaved the capsule in his wrist down.

For their part, the Cardinals are happy to land Cleto (pronounced Clay-tow), who consistently throws in the mid-90s and much of whose record came at home in High Desert, one of the most offense-friendly parks in all of the minor leagues.

Cleto has a power arm that at times has reached 100 (mph),'' Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said in a statement. ``He's someone that could project as a back-of-the-bullpen talent with additional development and experience.''
