It was announced yesterday that Nate Marquardt had been forced to withdraw from his main event bout with Rick Story.
Since then, rumors have been swirling have been swirling about why Nate was forced off of the card.
Many have speculated that it was likely due to Marquardt not being able to make weight, or being injured. There was even some talk of Nate being busted for using banned substances.
According to mmajunkie.com, all of the aforementioned speculations were inaccurate and Nate's suspension was actually due to some routine paperwork.
The Pennsylvania Sate Athletic Commission is still refusing to shed any light on what the specific requirements Nate failed to meet were, PSAC executive director Gregory Sirb did make it clear that Marquardt was given plenty of time to address the issue.
"We gave him every opportunity," Sirb said. "The last report we got was 4:00 yesterday. We had given him as much leeway as we could, but obviously, when you've got a live event, you've got to make a call at that time.
"(It's) pretty straightforward stuff. You've got to meet these requirements, and there's no ifs, ands or buts about it. Unfortunately, he did not. I felt for the kid. I really did. He knew about it, and I think he was trying."
Sirb went on to state that this whole ordeal has been going on for about a month and a half and that the Ultimate Fighting Championship was also well aware of the situation.
"Everybody knew. I think everybody assumed he was going to be able to qualify."
With this new information, it becomes much easier to understand UFC President Dana White's decision to release Marquardt from the promotion.
White is staunch businessman, so having to scrap a main event due to some paperwork seems like just the thing to push him over the edge.
The PSAC did give the world of mixed martial arts some good news, stating that Nate's suspension could be lifted as soon as he meets the requirements that he has so far failed to meet.
"He needs to show us a new report," Sirb said. "When that report comes in and he meets our requirements, which could even be tomorrow, we'll take him off. It could be two months, but it's an indefinite suspension until he submits that report we're looking for."
Marquardt could be eligible to compete in MMA again very soon, but whether or not White will allow him back into the UFC remains to be seen.
