The heart of the 2011-12 bowl season is upon us, and it’s time to examine which teams are on upset alert and which will be the ones doing the upsetting.
Teams like Texas, Auburn and Oklahoma had mediocre seasons and will be exposed as the frauds they really are when their opponents embarrass them on a national stage.
All of the following teams will win their bowls and embarrass the perennial powerhouses they are playing.
Iowa—The Iowa Hawkeyes are better than they receive credit for being and they will prove it to the nation when they stun the Oklahoma Sooners in the Insight Bowl.
Besides the fact that Oklahoma is ranked No. 14 in the nation, there is nothing that says that Iowa should be afraid of a team that doesn’t play defense.
Iowa has a stellar defense that can stifle Landry Jones and make the offense run slow, leaving the Hawkeyes enough space to sneak out a late victory and the upset of the bowl season.
California—The California Golden Bears will walk into a stadium against the Texas Longhorns and be the underdog in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. That’s where the fun starts.
While Longhorn nation won’t like this, good ol’ Texas will be trounced by a California team trying to prove its worth to the BCS.
Texas lacks the urgency needed to be a great Team I college football, and Cal will walk all over them on its way to one of the biggest surprises of this college football season.
Virginia—While Texas and Oklahoma are obvious frauds, there may be no bigger fraud in college football history than the Auburn Tigers this season.
The final nail in the coffin for Auburn will be a loss to the Virginia Cavaliers in what could be the worst Chick-fil-A Bowl in college football history.
With Auburn struggling in all aspects of the game, Virginia will dismantle the Tigers and show the BCS that the way they do things is as wrong as anything could possibly be.
