2011 NBA Mock Draft Has Colorado Star In Top 10
At the risk of offending one of the NBA's all-time greatest clutch shooters--Mr. Big Shot, Chauncey Billups--you can't say that the Colorado Buffaloes program has produced an overwhelming amount of NBA stars.
Perhaps that is one early strike against sophomore guard Alec Burks. So is his build....although that certainly hasn't stopped another Big XII alumni, Kevin Durant, from becoming a superstar at the NBA level.
Still, there are other, more valid questions surrounding Burks ability to transition to the NBA.
He's definitely has that slasher ability to get to the rim and make plays, which will probably remind teams out there of Derrick Rose. (And since Rose is coming off an MVP season, you know teams will be on the lookout for a player of comparable skill.) Translation: teams are very high on him.
But because he was the central piece in Boulder virtually the entire offense ran through him and he often led the point, instead of playing more of a traditional two-guard role.
While on some level that ability to handle the ball is an asset, it's also something to be a bit concerned about with respect to his NBA future. He's most likely going to play shooting guard which begs the question "how well will he be able to create shots and get to the rim when he's not leading the point?"
That remains to be seen and all signs do point to a career that will be a good one, especially since he's only 19 years old.
But coaching is going to be exceptionally vital to his development, and since he's likely going to a lottery team, his prospects of landing with an elite coach and staff are limited.
