2011 US Open Golf: Is the Stage Set for an Epic Comeback at the US Open?

Rory McIlroy's Big Lead Would Make Comeback in the US Open Epic

Rory McIlroy currently has a commanding six stroke lead over the competition. He's off to another resounding start, and is even drawing comparisons to Tiger Woods.

The problem is, unlike Woods, McIlroy has a history of collapsing in the moment. Woods would jump out to early leads, and it was nearly impossible to catch him once he had the lead.

McIlroy could have another collapse in his immediate future. If his performance in the Masters is any indication of what lies ahead, another epic comeback is in the works for someone in the field.

People are beginning to hand the tournament to McIlroy before the last rounds are even played. Let's not forget that history has a chance to repeat itself, and a regression is almost inevitable for McIlroy, given his historic play in the first two rounds.

McIlroy may try to protect his lead, rather than build on it. doing so could be detrimental to his game. If his confidence breaks, it's going to blow the door wide open for the field to get within reach, heading into round 4.

If his six stroke lead is cut to a three stroke lead, McIlroy won't be a lock for the tournament by any means.
