Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Will Wenger Persuade Samir Nasri to Stay with Gunners?

Arsenal Transfer Rumours See Arsene Wenger Trying to Persuade Samir Nasri to Stay, But will he Do It?

Arsenal have found themselves in a tough spot during the summer transfer window. The Gunners have been looking to add new talent, but have simultaneously been fighting to keep several strong players in the fold for next season.

Chief among those potentially hoping to bolt is midfielder Samir Nasri. The 23-year-old French dynamo is reportedly unhappy with the club's lack of hardware (and, to a lesser extent, with the salary offer in his contract extension), and has declined signing his extension to stay at Emirates, forcing the Gunners to sell him unless they improve this summer, lest they lose him for nothing next season.

But, according to a report from the Daily Express, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is hoping to convince Nasri to stick around at Emirates next season

The Gunners boss doesn't want to give up one of his most dynamic playmakers, particularly because the best bid for his services has come from rivals Manchester United, who Wenger certainly doesn't want to sell to.

So, he's meeting with Nasri and his representatives this week, to find out whether he can persuade Nasri to stay, or if he'll have to sell his talented midfielder for less than market value, just to get something back. But, can Wenger actually keep him at this point?

The report mentions a potential move for Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon, who remains one of the best in the sport when he's healthy (which he's seldom been over the last few seasons), as well as bids for Lille striker Gervinho, while other reports have the Gunners shooting for Bolton's Gary Cahill and Blackburn's Christopher Samba.

If the Gunners can make at least a couple of those moves, that should be enough to convince the talented Frenchman to stick around. Nasri has said he enjoys playing for Arsenal, but he wants to stay competitive for championships and hardware, and he needs convincing that Wenger is up to the challenge.

In the end, I still don't see Wenger selling at this point. The Frenchman won't sell Nasri to United for any cost (given his recent statements), and if he can grab at least a couple of the players on that list (or other suitable defenders), Nasri will stay. But, things are still very much up in the air, and at this point, there's a solid chance that Nasri bolts, depending on the outcome of the last round of discussions. This situation certainly merits monitoring going forward, but as of now, don't be surprised to see the French dynamo in the midfield for the Gunners next year.
