Tottenham Transfer Rumours See Spurs Up Bid to Land Brazilian Phenom Leandro Damiao
Tottenham came into the summer transfer period with a well-documented need to improve the talent at the front of it's offense. Spurs' strikers were flat out terrible last season, combining to net just 17 goals over the course of the season or fewer than Carlos Tevez or Dimitar Berbatov managed on their own.
Therefore, it makes perfect sense to see manager Harry Redknapp taking a long, hard look at just about every player available at the position (other than Nicklas Bendtner), and even a few who will likely cost a king's ransom to get.
One of those expensive players is Brazilian prodigy Leandro Damiao. The 21-year-old goal scoring phenom looks poised to leave home club Internacional this summer, but the Brazilian outfit is going to try to capitalize on his skills as much as possible.
How much will they try to get? Well, Spurs' initial bid, of 10.3 million, was almost instantly rejected by the Brazilian club, forcing Spurs to up the ante according to a report from the Telegraph.
As of now, Spurs' bid stands at 13.8 million, according to multiple media reports, but they're not the only ones in on the race.
Arsenal, Benfica and Roma are all in on this race, as well, as they all try to land the striker who averaged better than a goal per game last season in Brazil. He would represent a massive upgrade for Spurs at this point, and would give them the kind of goal-scoring weapon they sorely lacked at the front of the attack last season.
But, the Telegraph also speculates that in order to guarantee landing Damiao, the North London club might have to up it's bid to a whopping 20 million, not counting Damiao's wages.
In the end, this remains a fairly hotly contested race, but as the only team to submit a real bid at this point, Spurs have to be considered the front-runners. While it's unclear whether they'll be able to pony up the cash, the fact that none of the other clubs have bid means that in the end, Internacional may wind up being forced to take the 13.8 million offer, or something slightly higher, as they won't be able to play teams off one another for a bigger payday. Even if Spurs do pay, Damiao figures to prove well worth the trouble, as he's emerged as a dynamic scorer and just the kind of offensive talent this team needs to get back to the Champions League.
