Rob Growkowski: Why the New England Patriots TE Is Already the NFL's Best

To call New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski's second season in the NFL a breakout campaign would be an understatement and then some, as the former Arizona Wildcat standout has already reeled in 60 catches for 864 yards and 11 touchdowns entering Sunday action.

Gronkowski kept right on rolling in the Patriots' Week 13 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, hauling in five more passes for 64 yards and two scores, tying the NFL record for touchdown receptions in a single season by a tight end with 13.

"The Gronk" originally believed that he had broken the record with a two-yard score in the third quarter, but that play was ruled a lateral, giving Gronkowski the first rushing touchdown of his career.

All season long Gronkowski has proven to be an absolute matchup nightmare for opposing defenses; he's too fast for opposing linebackers, while his 6'6", 265-pound frame allows him to easily out-muscle defensive backs, especially in the red zone, where he's quickly become quarterback Tom Brady's favorite target.

Before this season, the San Diego Chargers' Antonio Gates, or possibly Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys, were widely considered the best at tight end in the National Football League, but those tables have most assuredly turned, with the debate now coming down to Gronkowski and fellow second-year pro Jimmy Graham of the New Orleans Saints.

A solid argument can certainly be made for Graham, who poses a slew of matchup problems in his own right, and whose 67 catches and 957 receiving yards lead all tight ends entering Week 13.

Gronkowski, however, prevails in one very important category that gives him the edge as the NFL's best tight end:

His nickname is "The Gronk." How can you not like that?
