Dante Bichette Jr. Comes off MLB Draft Board Much Sooner Than Expected

New York Yankees Reach For Son Of Former All-Star In 2011 MLB Draft

The New York Yankees were already behind the eight ball in the 2011 draft, having lost their first-round pick as compensation for signing Rafael Soriano. They didn?t do themselves any public relations favors by reaching with the first pick they did have (No. 51 overall), taking Dante Bichette Jr. more than a full round earlier than some had projected him.

Bichette Sr., a four-time All-Star outfielder with the Rockies, is (as noted by New York magazine) a longtime friend of Yankees manager Joe Girardi. The younger Bichette, a high school shortstop who may convert to the outfield, appears to have at least a percentage of his dad?s hitting ability.

Among several higher-rated prospects New York passed over for the younger Bichette, the name that stands out the most is Vanderbilt pitcher Grayson Garvin.

For any team to pass up a left-handed pitcher with possible first-round talent at No. 51 would be surprising. For the Yankees, who have always put a premium on lefties thanks to the demands of their home ballpark, it?s extraordinary.

Unless Bichette outperforms expectations, New York has a very good chance of regretting this selection.
