There seems to be a dark spot on the other wise successful season of the 2010 Ohio State football team. That dark spot is the Oct. 16 loss to Wisconsin, after OSU had been the No. 1 college team in the nation for less than a week.
Even though the Buckeyes were able to win every other game and pull out a few incredible performances after that, no win could erase the awfulness of that single loss of the season.
In order for most to see this season as a success, the Buckeyes are going to have win in the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas.
It may seem outrageous to some that fans, coaches, and players could possibly think that this season was anything less than a success. The Buckeyes had a record of 11-1 and won a Big Ten title for the sixth year in a row, but for some reason, that single loss really seemed to shake the confidence of everyone in the Buckeye nation.
It could be all due in part to the significance of that game and how crucial it was to the success and outcome of the rest of the season.
OSU went into that game as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. If the Buckeyes had been able to win this game and continue on to win the rest of the games this season, they would have been on their way to the National Championship this January.
This was truly crushing after the fact that bloggers, reporters, and fans had been hyping this season as the next championship season weeks before the game occurred.
In addition to losing their shot at the championship, this game highlighted many of the problems plaguing the Buckeyes early in the season. There were dropped passes, the special teams struggled, and there were interceptions. These frustrating mistakes not only haunted the team, but the fans watching the team as well.
The gravity of this loss was so great for the Buckeyes that people continued to talk about it weeks after they had lost and moved on from the game. Even though the Buckeyes improved greatly after this game and went on to win the rest of their games, it seems no one can forget the single loss of the season.
The year was somewhat redeemed by the fact that OSU won a sixth Big Ten title at the end of this season. However, to really show that this season was a success, the team is going to have bring home another bowl title.
That title will do several things for the fans of the team; first it will give the team and fans a national title, which will compensate for the fact that the Buckeyes will not be able to win a National Championship this season.
Second, it will prove to people that even when the Buckeyes lose, the team has the ability to bounce back from their setbacks.
Ending the season with a win will show that even though the Buckeyes bowl future earlier this season seemed bleak, they were successful in their ability to play hard through the rest of the season and make it to a bowl game.
If the team loses, all people are going to remember about this season are the negative aspects; the struggle of the special teams, the bad passes and catches and the one loss of the entire season.
If they win, this season will be seen overall as a success, with only a few minor setbacks along the way.
