College Football: Part-Time Summer Jobs for Preseason Top 25 Head Coaches

We all remember those "arduous" summer jobs that we all took on between our school days in Junior High, High School, and college.  Not many of them required much of a skill set or qualifications, but were there to pass the time and make a buck or two and go towards the things we truly enjoyed.

While the rest of us will be enjoying the sun, the surf, the greens, and the pool our head coaches will be hard at work this summer mulling over offensive and defensive schemes, game planning, and scouring the country for the nation's best recruits for the 2012 recruiting season.

But.., what if these coaches were able to do something during the summer as a part-time gig?  What if they were to do the normal everyday summer jobs that we did as kids, or; maybe even something to a higher degree or calling?

(Watching Charlie Weis flipping burgers or grilling hot dogs at the local burger joint sure would be a sight wouldn't it?)

Some of these will be serious, and others with tongue firmly held in cheek.

(Top 25 rankings taken from Rivals.com available for view here).

Teenager applies for Georgia Tech position

In today's feature, which assigned letter grades and (hopefully) constructive comments to each of this offseason's biggest coaching hires, I gave Georgia Tech's decision to hire former Dayton coach Brian Gregory a D. Why? Because the hiring of Gregory, though understandable thanks to the financial struggles associated with Tech's budget (not to mention that $7 million buyout for Paul Hewitt), still felt a bit uninspired.

Then again, when your other coaching candidates include a precocious 15-year-old, maybe it's best to play it safe.

Yes, as The Sporting News's Mike DeCourcy reported today, Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich was in mid-search when he received a curious letter from 15-year-old Connecticut native Ethan Peikes. That letter began with a simple sentence:
“Mr. Radakovich,” he wrote, “my name is Ethan Peikes and I am 15 years old.”

As DeCourcy writes, Peikes' chances of landing the job ended then and there. But the letter went on, and Radakovich read it all, including Peikes' assertions that the move would bring Georgia Tech international renown, that the move was financially sound (Peikes was open to not receiving a salary for his work), that he was the right coach to "take the program to even higher excellence."

Did he actually think he was going to get the gig? Not exactly. The letter was more about fun and spontaneity. But Peikes did receive a response from Radakovich, which I'm assuming was one of the funniest letters the athletic director has written since, well, ever.
“The athletics director told me I’m going to need a college degree. That’s something to work on,” Peikes said. “I don’t know exactly what the qualifications are. I should probably look into that. I’ve got to study the game more, learn more about the game.

“He was very kind, sent me a brief little note saying to come visit Georgia Tech in a few years.”

“I sort of knew the likelihood of me getting the job -- it was not a big chance.”

No, no it was not. But the idea was pretty awesome all the same.

2011 NFL Draft Results: Buccaneers Steal Da'Quan Bowers in Second Round

Buccaneers address defensive front, add former Clemson Standout Da'Quan Bowers

As the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft kicked off on Friday evening the question in everyone's mind remained the same: How far will Da'Quan Bowers fall?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers would answer that question when they were on the clock at No. 51.

MUST READ: Team Report Cards for First Three Rounds

Bowers was at one point thought to be a top two pick in the draft, but a lackluster performance in front of scouts and a less than stellar combine hurt his draft stock.

Adding to Bowers' woes was a knee injury that scouts and physicians alike had trouble assessing. All players have injuries, and teams can work with that. But if a players' ability to recover comes into question their stock can plummet.

At No. 51 his upside well outweighs the questions that surround him and if he's able to stay on the field he'll be a very effective on the end and should provide consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks every down he's out there.

2011 NBA Free Agency: Top 10 Players the Portland Trail Blazers Should Go After

With all of the injury issues that plagued the Trail Blazer's regular season, how they finished should not be considered a disappointment. But if the Blazer's want to make the jump to the next level of elite teams, there are a few positions they should add to.

Here are the 10 players that should be at the top of the Blazers radar:

End of an Era: San Antonio Spurs Fall to Younger and Hungrier Grizzlies in Six

Over the last 14 years, the San Antonio Spurs have been the model of success in the NBA.

No mega superstars, no egos, no blockbuster signings, and no off-the-court problems.

The Spurs built their franchise by investing heavily in the draft and signing players who silently contributed over the years. San Antonio could run-and-gun with the likes of Dallas and Phoenix or trade blow-for-blow with the top contenders in the leagues.

They could play to any situation at any time that it called for, until this year.

The Spurs weren't just older, slower, and smaller, they were also outplayed, out-rebounded, out-muscled, and out-hustled by the eighth-seeded Memphis Grizzlies. If not for two amazing last second shots in Game 5, San Antonio would have lost four games to one.

After a hot start to the season, Richard Jefferson reverted back to his 2010 Spurs version. Starting in November, Jefferson's points per game dropped every single month, from 14.7 in November down to 8.7 in March.

DeJuan Blair was non-existent in the playoffs, Antonio McDyess was outplayed by the younger and hungrier Zach Randolph, and The Red Rocket, Matt Bonner, who during the regular season hit nearly 46 percent of his three-pointers, shot just 27 percent in the playoffs.

In the end, when the stats are looked over and video is broken down, one conclusion can be drawn—the Spurs are old, slow and one-and-done.

It is the end of an era.

If the Spurs wish to continue their playoff run for a 15th season, they must do something they rarely, if ever, do—sign a big time free agent and get younger quick.

All season long, the Spurs had trouble down low and never was this more evident than in the first round of the playoffs against the Grizzlies and their tandem of Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph.

The Spurs have never been a physical team (although Steve Nash may beg to differ) but starting this offseason, they may have to become one to compete for a NBA title.

2011 NFL Draft: Overall Final Grade for the Lions Two Second Round Picks

So here we go again.  Another two picks that seemed to come out of nowhere. I love the Detroit Lions and I'm sure that there is a method to their madness of drafting philosophy this year, but it has felt a bit like throwing a dart at the draft board.

I'm not going to criticize the team that has my full support but I am going to scratch my head for a while.

With their first second round pick, the Detroit Lions select WR Titus Young. They trade up to the 57th pick of the second round and select RB Mikel LeShoure.

Did the Lions need another WR to compliment Calvin Johnson and to put Nate Burleson back in the slot? Yes.

Did they also need another RB to help take some of the weight off of Jahvid Best? Yes, especially since they have decided that Kevin Smith is not ever going to be that guy.

But what happened to the enormously glaring needs at OLB?

I'm no GM but I would have focused on CB, OLB or OG/C with these picks and then gone for the best WR and RB available. That philosophy may be exactly why I am just a fan and not a GM.

My take? They must be looking for young talent at certain positions and will either get the rest through free agency (which we don't even know if we'll have) or are confident that they already have all the players they need on the roster.

The last scenario would actually be a testament to how much faith Martin Mayhew (GM) and Jim Schwartz (head coach ) must have in the current nucleus, because it is this core that has to be able to hold up the weaker parts of the whole.

The entire idea would revolve around the big time players and veterans becoming the force that holds all other players to a higher standard. We saw that with Kyle Vanden Bosch last year but he may have his hands full with our first round pick, DT Nick Fairley.

Nate Burleson will be mentoring WR Titus Young and Maurice Morris will have to mentor RB Mikel LeShoure.

Okay, that all sounds good, but who will be working the OLB position? Who will the Lions have to lead the decreasing group of linebackers on the roster? Bobby Carpenter?

I know it is early and these guys may end up joining the list of many of the other great draft picks from the past two years, yet I am still dumbfounded about not filling the one position we don't have any players in reserve to fill. Julian Peterson is gone. Zack Follett is a huge question mark for next season.

Maybe the plan for the puzzle of the missing OLBs is to ask other players to switch to the outside. I'm curious about who that might be but am hopeful that Mayhew and Schwartz have already figured that part out. They were not making any moves to take an OLB high in the draft so I am left to believe that they must know something that we don't.

I will eagerly wait to see what happens tomorrow.

For today, with the two picks in the second round, I reluctantly give Mayhew and Schwartz a B

This grade is due to the pure value of the picks and out of believing there must not have been a player that impressed them enough at the OLB or CB positions to get them in the early rounds.

I have no real concerns about the players they chose, but I do have concerns about the players they didn't choose.

2011 NFL Mock Draft Full 2nd-Round Picks including Patriots Taking Allen Bailey

I?m not kidding; the New England Patriots have ANOTHER pick in the second round.

They have to be trading around here because they can take so many player, Bill Belichick?s head would explode.

If they end up picking at this No. 60 spot, they have to think about getting a versatile player in the front seven who can rush the passer.

I think a perfect fit for New England here would be Miami Hurricane Allen Bailey.

With Bailey being a converted linebacker, he has played defensive tackle and end and would fit anywhere that Belichick tells him to play.

Derek Lowe: Atlanta Braves Pitcher Arrested for DUI, Other Charges

It is not a good time to be Derek Lowe right now.

Lowe, a pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, was arrested last night after police pulled him over and smelled alcohol, according to TMZ.com.

The pitcher refused a sobriety test, so the police took him into custody and had his car thrown in the impound lot, eventually charging him with DUI, reckless driving and an improper lane change. Lowe posted bond and is now out of jail.

Needless to say, this is the last thing Lowe and the Braves wanted. The veteran pitcher is a major part Atlanta's rotation, and this is a needless distraction during a season.

Furthermore, for Lowe to be that drunk at 10 p.m. is a little disturbing. It's simply irresponsible to put himself in a situation like that, especially when he's slated to pitch Sunday.

However, this isn't the first time Lowe has been linked to alcohol and excess.

Per Kevin Roderick of LAObserved.com:

Trinka Lowe alleged in her deposition that the pitcher's agent, Scott Boras, suggested an "intervention" to deal with the player's drinking and told her the Red Sox did not re-sign Lowe after the 2004 season because of his alcohol problem. In his deposition, Derek Lowe acknowledged that the Red Sox thought he had a drinking issue but that he disagreed.

According to Fineman, Trinka Lowe said the alcohol issue got so bad when Boston was in the playoffs in 2004 that bullpen catcher Dana Lavangie phoned her at home in Fort Meyers, Florida "and told me that I needed to come up to Boston because Derek was falling apart....He was depressed. They had taken him out of the starting rotation. He was in the bullpen. They told him pretty much he wasn't going to touch the baseball for any of the playoffs."

Lowe would get drunk last season in the Dodgers clubhouse with clubhouse manager Dave Dickinson, Trinka contends. Dickinson told Fineman "he would drink with Lowe occasionally after games, but not every night. And he also said he did not see Lowe get drunk in the clubhouse."

It's clear now that he has to get help for himself.

Lowe simply cannot be living like this anymore because now he's not just risking his own life, he's putting others in dangers as well.

If he doesn't get help for this issue, it's going to consume him and cut short what has been a very underrated career. It's sad to see it come to this, and you have to wonder what the Braves are going to do about this very delicate situation.

2011 NFL Draft Results: What Cardinals Get in CB Patrick Peterson

Love it.

Love it, love it, love it.

Did I mention...?

Anyway, to the point...

The Arizona Cardinals got maybe the best overall player in the draft in Patrick Peterson with the fifth pick Thursday night.

In Peterson, they get a 6'1", 220 lb. possible shutdown cornerback.

Now the question is, when does he start?

Is it immediately, like most number five picks will?

Or do the Cardinals start him in the nickel like they did with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, then let him start halfway through the season?

I'm going to say probably immediately, but it's going to be tough with a shorter offseason for him to get used to the Cardinals system.

And while I'm on what his impact will be, will he return punts?

It would certainly help alleviate the pressure on Andre Roberts, so that he could be the number three receiver for the Cardinals.

But more importantly than that, he may give the Cardinals the chance to have the best secondary in the NFC, maybe the NFL, next year.

Me?

I love this pick.

What about you?

What grade would you give it?

I'll give it an A+.

Do we still have needs? Yes.

But heck. We just got maybe the best cornerback since Champ Bailey.

2011 NFL Mock Draft: Which Players Could Get Nabbed on Day 2?

The 2011 NFL Draft has already been full of surprises. The Atlanta Falcons sold the farm to acquire Julio Jones, the Tennessee Titans made a dumb play in grabbing Jake Locker too early, and Blaine Gabbert was selected by, of all teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Needless to say, there are players that will fall to the second round that should have went in the first. Beyond that, there will still be plenty of hidden gems in the second round.

The Buffalo Bills found safety Jarius Byrd in 2009, The Cleveland Browns selected T.J. Ward in 2010, and in 2008 the Philadelphia Eagles found some wide receiver named DeSean Jackson.

Who will be the big time gems to come out of the second round? Could Ryan Mallett or Colin Kaepernick make the list of potential later gems? Find out below.

Classic UCLA center circle up for auction

If I had the ability to code a Drudge-style blue-and-gold siren aimed solely at UCLA alums with massive amounts of cash to burn, that siren would be flashing bold and bright in this blog post at this very moment. Because if you're a UCLA alumni who also happens to be a basketball fan (that's easy!) and massively rich (OK, not so easy), the time to act is now.

On April 15, an undisclosed UCLA alumni decided to auction off one of the coolest and therefore most expensive pieces of memorabilia in Bruins history. The object at hand is the classic powder-blue UCLA center circle from the original Pauley Pavilion floor, the nexus of theJohn Wooden era. It's as iconic as college hoops collector's items come, and that's why, according to SCP Auctions, the bidding for the center circle had already reached $94,948 by Tuesday afternoon. The signatures of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Walton and Wooden himself certainly aren't hurting the value.

You don't have to be a Bruins die-hard to salivate over the rumpus-room possibilities available here. Wall-space is a requirement, of course -- the thing is 12-feet in diameter -- but nothing on your walls at present deserves to take precedence over this. It's the basement game-room addition to end all basement game-room additions. There's no topping this level of awesomeness. It's "if-I-won-the-lottery"-level stuff for any college hoops fan.

Then again, if UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero had his way, the original Pauley center court wouldn't be gracing anyone's pool hall in the years to come. According to the Long Beach Press-Telegram, Guerrero is "disappointed" that the anonymous UCLA alum -- widely believed to be the ex-wife of a former Bruin All-American point guard who bought the court after it was discovered sitting in storage in a campus warehouse -- isn't doing more to ensure the court returns to UCLA to be displayed alongside the Wooden den archives at the soon-to-be-renovated Pauley Pavilion in the decades to come.
"We are extremely disappointed to hear that the original center circle from Pauley Pavilion has been put up for auction," Guerrero said. "We have made numerous attempts to reacquire the center circle from the current owner but were rebuffed on every try. We even had a donor ready to make a donation to the owner's charity of choice. The center circle belongs on display at new Pauley Pavilion and we are hopeful that we will be able to work out an arrangement with the new owner to bring this important piece of UCLA basketball history back to its home."

Of course, there's still the possibility that the highest bidder in this week's auction will choose to donate the court back to UCLA, or will make some arrangement for a reasonable transfer of ownership. That might be the right thing to do. Then again, while "I donated the center circle back to UCLA" is a pretty neat thing to say, it pales in comparison to "every day I wake up, get dressed for work, and slap my powder-blue UCLA center circle on my way out the door, you guys totally have to come check this thing out."

In any case, here's your heads up, wealthy Bruins fans. The auction is set to end at 7 p.m. Saturday, so get your six-figure bids in now. Which would you rather have: All that money or the center circle? Choose wisely. After all, it's just money.

Kemba Walker clarifies comment on reading

During the Final Four Kemba Walker seemed to confirm to Sports Illustrated his academic counselor's suggestion that he had just recently read a book cover-to-cover for the first time. He told told the magazine, "That's true. You can write that. It's the first book I've ever read."

On Wednesday as the UConn Huskies toured the State Capitol in Hartford, Walker clarified the comment to The Associated Press.
He said it upsets him that the comment may have hurt the school's reputation.

"That's just what people want," Walker said. "They want to bring us down. Regardless of what they say, I'm still graduating in three years, so that comment means absolutely nothing. I've read a lot of books."

He said he was talking about loving a book so much that he just sat down and read it cover-to-cover.

"It's a big emphasis on academics at UConn," he said. "They make sure we are student-athletes first. I'm going to get my degree. I will find time to do my work."

After the reaction the comment generated, Walker told the Hartford Courant earlier in April that, "I read a lot of books. But not just start to finish. I might have skipped some chapters."

Walker's original comment came at a time when he was aiming toward graduating in three years. He left for the NBA draft after leading UConn to the national championship.

The Huskies are also facing a possible penalty if they do not make a sufficient score with the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate, and Calhoun could lose his bonus money for winning the NCAA title. In addressing the issue, he had this explanation:

"Eight straight years, we made the APR," Calhoun told The Associated Press. "If because someone left early or didn't finish, all those various things that get you ... when you have 16 kids leave (for the pros) in a 10-year period, you are more likely to be more open to (a low APR) happening."

There's a sign on the wall leading into the Atlanta Hawks' locker room that says: "We Control Our Own Destiny." Indeed, even after a humiliating loss in Orlando, the Hawks remain in control of their playoff destiny against the Magic. They're still leading the series. They're still one win away from finishing off the Magic.

Hoops attendance down, but not by much

Last spring, when the NCAA released its 2009-10 college basketball attendance data, the conflicting numbers seemed to say two things at once: College hoops attendance was both down and up.

Of course, that wasn't true. In 2010, over 27 million people attended a college basketball game, the fourth-highest total in NCAA history. But because that number was spread across a larger-than-ever group of Division I schools, average attendance dipped by about three percent despite the sport's total gain.

Twelve months and one rather thrilling season later, the NCAA has released an updated set of data. Where does Division I college hoops attendance stand now?

The answer: Pretty much where it was in 2010. According to the NCAA, 27,626,125 fans showed up for D-I hoops games over the course of the 2010-11 season. That's an increase of 86,706 total fans from last season's tally. But the overall D-I attendance average figure took the slightest of dips: An average of eight fewer fans attended all D-I hoops events this year compared to 2010.

You can break this down further, if you're so inclined, by enlarging this handy chart. Among the notables are a slight year-over-year decline in NCAA tournament attendance and a more pronounced decline in 2010-11 Division I home game attendance.

Both of which are, to be frank, no big deal. That goes for the overall numbers, too. Sure, the NCAA might like to show a greater average fan increase. It would surely also prefer to show an increase in NCAA tournament attendance. But an overall increase isn't so bad itself, and when you factor in such a large number of schools -- 335 this season, the most of any year by the NCAA's count -- a tiny decrease in average fan attendance is hardly something to fret over. Frankly, it's the cost of doing business at a 335-school scale. Not every Division I gym is Rupp Arena or the Carrier Dome; some schools just play in tiny and poorly attended environments. Oh well. (Plus, the NCAA record an all-time high -- 1,788,364 fans over 235 games --in non-NCAA tournament neutral-site attendance. So that's something.)

Oh, and speaking of Rupp Arena, the NCAA also released the individual attendance rankings. You'll never guess who came in first. OK, so you probably will; it was Kentucky. Big Blue Nation packed Rupp to the tune 23,603 fans per game, the highest average mark in the country. Syracuse came in second with 22,312; Louisville, North Carolina and Tennessee round out the top five.

Here's an interesting tidbit: Coming in at No. 6 in the nation was BYU, which was one of only two schools to experience an average home attendance increased of greater than 4,000 fans. The other? San Diego State. The power of The Jimmer (and/or Kawhi Leonard) strikes again.

In any case, there are your 2010-11 attendance numbers. Not great. Not bad. Not showing off. Right in the meat of the curve.

In an age where college basketball seems constantly besieged by rumors of its popular demise, there are no sweeping conclusions to be drawn here. George Costanza would have been proud.

How many more times will we see Tim Duncan's crew deep in the playoffs?

Matt McHale, writing on Basketbawful, has been watching the San Antonio Spurs for years. He was enraged when Robert Horry hip-checked Steve Nash into the scorer's table in 2007, and thrilled to see a team win so much by playing the right way. But, McHale says, with the Grizzlies leading the Spurs 3-1 and poised to be a rare eighth seed to win a series, an era is ending:
It's over. It's really and truly over. We never felt totally safe counting the Spurs out because Duncan and the team had been too good for too long. Look! They keep winning 50 games a season! Look! Duncan's numbers are still on par with his prime! They still look and act like the Spurs. They must still be the Spurs.

No. No, they aren't.

I'm sad. Really and truly sad. It feels like something is passing away. I am a fan of NBA basketball. Over the last decade-plus, I have followed the Association as closely as almost anybody. Duncan and the Spurs -- sometimes heroes, sometimes villains -- have defined (or helped define) a full third of my life on this planet. Now they're fading away. Not only that, I realize now they have been fading right before my eyes. For years.

Andrew Luck and the NFL Draft: How the Quarterback Can Alter This Year's Draft

This is the NFL, or "Not For Long" as former Falcons Coach Jerry Glanville is famous for saying.

Every team and every coach has to go into the season thinking that they can compete for a division title and a playoff berth, and every year a team comes from the bottom of the pack and surprises everyone (see KC and Tampa Bay in 2010).

Every coach and GM must win now in order to secure their jobs, but, if teams take a step back, they may see a golden opportunity in this draft to build for the future.

Andrew Luck has it all. No quarterback since Peyton Manning has been such a sure thing.

He has the pedigree, the size, the arm, the well-groomed habits, the smarts, the leadership, and as a bonus, he is already a pocket passer.

When Luck decided to stay in school, the Panthers cried, I am sure.

In my opinion, barring injury, Luck will be a mainstay on his team for over a decade, and has the potential to be a Hall of Fame quarterback, much like Peyton Manning. Ask any coach if he could have drafted Peyton, would he - and I guarantee they all would have.

So, with the second coming, will coaches consider the potential for drafting this once-in-a-generation prospect?

They should at least keep it in the back of their minds, and, if they play their cards right, they may just help their careers and their team, by securing the next great player.

2011 NFL Mock Draft: All 32 1st-Round Picks, Patrick Peterson to Cleveland

2011 NFL Mock Draft Sees Cleveland Browns Grab Top Talent Patrick Peterson, Bolster Secondary

The Cleveland Browns come into this draft in better shape than they were last season. Sure, they still need playmaking wideout, and the defense could use a few playmakers of its own, but they're not as bad as people think.

With plenty of options to bolster both sides of the ball here, I think the Browns go for the best available player, who is without a doubt LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson.

People are calling the defensive back the best secondary prospect in a generation, and given what he's shown us on the field, I'm inclined to believe it.

With his size, he can't be bullied by bigger wideouts, while his excellent speed means he won't be burned by speedy receivers. He's one of the best cover corners in recent memory, with the kind of hands to be a real ball-hawk.

Must Read: 2011 NFL Mock Draft: Will Jake Locker Sneak into Top 10?

But, that's not all Peterson is capable of. He's a fantastic kick returner, to boot, capable of delivering sensational runbacks like few other players can.

Granted, the Browns have a kick returner in Josh Cribbs, and they have a promising young corner in Joe Haden, but why not turn your secondary into one of the most formidable young units in the NFL by taking the best corner prospect in the draft? It fills a need, and gives them depth and talent few can match.

Wideout Julio Jones, defensive lineman Nick Fairley, and defensive end Robert Quinn could all come off the board here as well, but I think Peterson's talent is just too good to pass up at this point. If you're the Browns, he represents a major steal this late in the draft.

So is this how the San Antonio Spurs' dynasty might end? Not with Tim Duncan hoisting a fifth NBA championship trophy -- a scenario that seemed wholly realistic just a month ago -- but with the top-seeded Spurs ousted in the first round by the eighth-seeded Memphis Grizzlies, a franchise that previously never won a playoff game?

NBA Playoffs 2011: Will OKC Thunder's Youth and Lack of Experience Hurt Them?

The Thunder won’t be planning any championship parades just yet, not when this group has yet to win a single playoff series.
– ESPN’s John Hollinger

You need extensive playoff experience to win an NBA title. It's an assumption so taken for granted that it barely merits an aside in Hollinger's article about the Thunder. But is it true?

The conventional wisdom is that teams have a natural "maturation" process. That you don't become a title contender overnight, that it takes years to build up the necessary shared playoff experience to understand "what it takes" to win a title.

In this telling, the act of winning 16 basketball games over the course of two months takes on metaphorical significance. Playing a role on a team that wins four playoff series in a row becomes a symbol of personal integrity and character, and failing to do so reveals some sort of underlying flaw.

Devean George parlayed PER's of 6.2, 12.6 and 11.4 during the Lakers' three-peat into a career as a veteran with "championship experience." Conversely, never winning a title becomes an asterisk on the legacy of great players.

But at the end of the day, basketball is just a game of ten guys in tank-tops and shorts running around a hard-wood floor trying to throw a ball through a raised cylinder. And to win a game, you have to throw the ball into your opponent's cylinder more often than he throws it into yours.

None of this changes in the playoffs: the court is still 94 feet long; the rims are still 10 feet high. It's still the same game.

So when we talk about championship experience, are we confusing causation with correlation? Are teams better because they have playoff experience, or does that experience merely show they were good in the first place?

The 2007-2008 Boston Celtics were assembled in one offseason, with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen coming over in trades. While their best players (Pierce, Garnett and Allen) were long-time NBA vets, their starting five, with Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins flanking the "Big Three," had never been in a playoff series before.

But their "fit" was perfect. Two mobile and athletic seven-footers patrolled the paint, and the Celtics had the league's highest-rated defense.

Offensively, Rondo's lack of a jumper was off-set by three Hall-of-Famers who were near-automatic from the perimeter, while their inability to create easy looks due to age was offset by one of the NBA's most athletic point guards, who could get into the lane and draw defensive attention at will.

They played the Lakers in the NBA Finals, a team with only three players (Derek Fisher, Kobe and Lamar Odom) who'd won a playoff series before that season.

But the midseason acquisition of Pau Gasol, a long, mobile and skilled seven-footer, instantly transformed the Lakers from also-rans to title contenders.

They lost to the new-look Celtics but haven't lost a playoff series since.

While many credit intangibles for the Lakers and Celtics' success (Boston's veterans sacrificing individual statistics and espousing a "ubuntu" philosophy of team unity, Kobe learning how to lead a team while infusing the Lakers bigs with toughness they never had before) aren't the tangible reasons (Boston's defensive length and offensive skill, the Lakers' combination of three 6'10+ skilled big men and one of the best shooting guards of all time) just as plausible, if not more so?

As fans, we tend to overrate the importance of intangibles (desire, experience and chemistry) and underrate the importance of tangibles (size, skill and speed).

The NBA playoffs become a vehicle where we project our morality on a glorified ball-throwing contest: somehow it became LeBron's fault that none of his point guards could guard Rajon Rondo last year, Dirk's fault that none of his centers could guard Tim Duncan or Shaq.

We use moral narratives to explain the world around us. When man first looked upon the stars, we had no concept of astronomy, so we created stories to explain how the constellations came to be.

The NBA, like any other culture, has a series of founding myths and creation stories. And no story is more important to the modern NBA than the myth of Michael Jordan: the young hero from a small town in North Carolina who overcomes the non-believers (the coach who cut him in high school, the team who passed him in the draft) to become the best player in the world.

But like any archetypal hero, he has to be humbled before he can finish his journey. He has to be tested and brought to his knees by a daunting foe (the Bad Boy Pistons), with success only coming when a wise old sage (Phil Jackson) convinces him to trust his teammates (running the Triangle).

And just as a hero has to overcome a conflict to finish his journey, a player must face hardship before he can become a "champion", he must have playoff experience. Since Westbrook and Durant haven't established themselves as NBA characters yet, people assume they can't win a title this year. It doesn't fit the narrative.

But great players are great players, they don't adjust to the playoffs, the playoffs adjust to them. In his first playoff appearance, a 22-year old Chris Paul averaged 24 points and 11 assists on 50% shooting over 12 games. At 21, LeBron James averaged 30 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists in 48% shooting over 13 playoff games and Tim Duncan averaged 21 points and 9 rebounds on 52% shooting over nine.

** I remember Dallas fans celebrating in 2007 because they were facing New Orleans in the first round. It was the match-up they wanted, because the Hornets had no playoff experience! But the calendar switching didn't make Chris Paul any slower or Jason Kidd any faster, and New Orleans dispatched a vastly more experienced Dallas team in five games. **

Talent is more important than age in the playoffs.

In crunch-time, the Thunder often use a line-up of Russell Westbrook (22), James Harden (21), Kevin Durant (22), Serge Ibaka (21) and Kendrick Perkins (26). LeBron and Paul put up all-time great performances at the same age; it wasn't a lack of experience that did them in, it was a lack of talent around them.

Oklahoma City's loss to the Lakers in last year's playoffs had a lot more to do with their size than with their age. They were starting Nenad Krstic and Jeff Green against Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum, and the results were all too predictable.

It would have been easy for the Thunder to stand pat and keep their core together. No one would have faulted them. And at some point in the playoffs, their lack of interior defense would have cost them.

But Sam Presti looked out around the rest of the NBA and he didn't see any Goliaths looming. So he went all-in, grabbing the missing piece in Kendrick Perkins, a 6'10 280 brick-wall of a center, and the best low-post defender in the NBA.

Since inserting Perkins and Ibaka in the starting line-up, they've gone 19-5 with a scoring margin of +6.5, beating the Lakers, the Heat, the Trail Blazers and the Nuggets.

They are set up for a playoff-run much like the 2004 Pistons and the 2008 Lakers, both of whom acquired game-changing big men (Rasheed Wallace and Pau Gasol) at midseason and began rolling immediately.

The Thunder have the talent to win it all this year. And if they don't, it will be because a playoff opponent matches up well with them, not because they lack championship experience.
