Technically, we know how they are deciding the next World Heavyweight Champion.
Edge vacated the World Heavyweight Championship on Friday Night Smackdown, and then a Battle Royal was held to determine who will face Alberto Del Rio at Extreme Rules in a Ladder Match for the newly vacated title.
WWE finally did what most fans have wanted to see for years, and has put Christian in the main event, as in a match for a World Championship.
It's always tricky booking around a vacated championship, and if not handled carefully, we can end up with another No Mercy 2007.
The IWC is always quick to bash WWE; however, I think most fans would agree they've handled this particular situation pretty well.
It was no doubt tough to hear Edge was being forced to retire early due to an injury, and with that came a real challenge booking-wise. How would they phase out not only one of the biggest stars in wrestling history, but the current World Heavyweight Champion?
The solution was really very simple. Just don't over-think it. Here is one of the best WWE Superstars of all time; just give him a mic and let him do his thing. He delivered a nice farewell on Raw and a great retirement speech on Smackdown this week.
But what about the World Heavyweight Championship? Edge was the current champion and had a match set for Extreme Rules against Alberto Del Rio.
Who doesn't like Battle Royals? So, they held a Battle Royal on Smackdown, which Christian won. Cue the marks (myself being one). Christian is finally getting his much deserved run at the top. And it only took the retirement of his best friend to push WWE to make that call.
The icing on the cake here is to have Christian finish what Edge started and win at Extreme Rules, and given the special circumstance, this may be Christian's time.
