Masters 2011 Leaderboard Day 3: Will Bo Van Pelt Become the Unlikely Champion?

Does The Journeyman Pro Have A Chance To Claim The Green Jacket?

The leaderboard this Saturday is certainly diverse. Tiger Woods is arguably the greatest player of all time. Fred Couples was a Masters champion....two decades ago. K.J. Choi is a very accomplished player and has come close at Augusta before, as has Adam Scott. And then there are that barely-old-enough-to-buy-drinks trio of Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, and Rory McIlroy who have been collecting birdies all over the course.

Each of those players is either a former major champion or is expected to claim one sooner rather than later.

But there is one real oddball on the top of the leaderboard who is making an improbable run: 35-year-old Bo Van Pelt.

With only one PGA title since turning pro in 1998--and only one Top 25 finish at a major--he was hardly a favorite this week. He's ranked 90th in the world, doens't have a Top 10 finish this year, and has been cut from almost half of the events in which he's appeared.

None of that matters, however, as long as you make the field. And after a tough opening round, one-over-73, he posted a wonderful 69 on Friday and is having a remarkable day this Saturday.

Following a nice front nine 35, he's tore up the back nine with four birdies to pull into a tie for fourth place at seven-under.

Watching Tiger or Phil, or even the hot shot youngster like Rory McIlroy on the final Sunday at the Masters is special and something of an annual American tradition. But so is rooting for the REAL underdog. And tomorrow that might be Van Pelt.
