NFL Draft 2011: How Could Colin McCarthy Help the Atlanta Falcons?

Atlanta Falcons Draft: Do the Falcons need inside linebacker depth?

Curtis Lofton has inside linebacker locked down for the Falcons. He's apt at getting sideline to sideline and doesn't cost the team anything in pass coverage. But what happens if something happens to Lofton? Or what happens if he skips town as an unrestricted free agent after 2011?

Staying one step ahead is the how the best teams stay on top. That's one reason Russ Lande of Sporting News believes the Atlanta Falcons should draft McCarthy in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Spencer Adkins?another Miami product?is currently the backup. His limited action hasn't led anyone to believe he's ready to become an NFL starter. That's not to say that McCarthy has either, but he's got a skill set that gives him potential to be a quality linebacker in the pros.

He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.59 seconds and leaps 36.5 inches in the vertical jump. That type of athleticism alone makes him an intriguing prospect at inside linebacker. He also put up stats, racking up 119 tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss last season.
