NFL Draft 2011: The Panthers Will Regret Taking Cam Newton No. 1

NFL Draft 2011 poses big questions for Panthers

How powerful is the allure of potential?

The Carolina Panthers are getting a lesson in that right now.

The closer we move to the draft the more Cam Newton?s name is being brought up.

The reigning Heisman Trophy winner and Auburn stud brings with him hope for the future, but a shaky promise for results. Hope, if you are the Panthers, is powerful. Jimmy Clausen doesn?t give it to you. Ron Rivera brings stability, but hope for most teams comes from the quarterback position.

Still, hope is different than promise. Newton brings hope but he doesn?t promise anything. With the NFL it?s about more than physical tools.

It?s about fundamentals. Newton, look most out-of-the-pocket passers, doesn?t have the kind of fundamentals that you can count on.

Can he read defenses?

Can he work through progressions?

Does he have the will and the want to get better?

It appears that Cam Newton is most interested in his own hype. He wants to be a sports icon when the Panthers will just want him to be a workaholic.

You can?t get by on talent alone in the NFL. The great ones study for hours and put in an endless amount of time on game film and work. If Cam is committed(which I question)then maybe he?s worth the risk, but if he?s not. If there?s a moment of hesitation, then you have to let someone else take him.

The Panthers want to win for the long haul and Cam isn?t the guy for that job.
