NFL Draft 2011: Should Carolina Panthers Trade out of Top Spot?

Carolina Panthers Draft: Getting more bodies might be more important than top pick:

While everyone speculates what player is the best for the Carolina Panthers to pick first overall, Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN has a different idea, reports Joe Person of The Charlotte Observer. Kiper believes that the Panthers should trade out of the top spot and give quarterback Jimmy Clausen another chance.

His arguments for Clausen are that he was stuck with a talentless offense, a head coach in limbo and conservative play-calling designed to help him that was actually hurting him. He's got a point. What has changed so drastically in a year that has taken Clausen from a second-round pick to a player with no future?

He had practically no running game with both DeAngelo Hall and Jonathan Stewart dealing with injuries. Who is a proven wide receiver for the Panthers outside of aging Steve Smith? Clausen should get an honest chance, especially considering the uncertainty about both Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert.

Then factor in Carolina's need along the defensive line, the fact that it currently has no second-round pick and it's need for bodies in many places and a trade seems like a obvious goal.

Finding a partner, however, could prove difficult. It would likely have to come from a team outside of the top five in love with Newton, Gabbert, defensive tackle Marcell Dareus or outside linebacker Von Miller.
