Smith continues rehab, concerned about knee's strength
Seems like wide receiver Steve Smith is on track with rehabbing his knee, but there's an interesting quote in this recent New York Daily News story.
"It?s a serious injury," said Smith, who had microfracture surgery last December. "... I?ve got to wait and see til I?m done running. Probably I?m going to have to change a little bit this year, so we?ll see."
Going to have to change?
I understand players are always hesitant and cautious coming off an injury or major surgery, which is what may be the case here. If Smith returns, though, and alters his game and doesn't have the same ability, doesn't that hinder the team somewhat? Which is why I wonder if it wouldn't be wise to pad the receiver position with a late-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Before getting injured last year against Minnesota, Smith had 48 catches for 529 yards and three touchdowns. That's an 11-yard-per catch average, for those wondering.
Smith, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham and tight end Kevin Boss are a pretty lethal group of receivers. Not a lot of concern there.
Yet, as the story points out, this is where you've got to also decide if you pursue Plaxico Burress, and have him return to the team upon his release from jail. Hey, if Michael Vick could pull it off, I'd be willing to give Plaxico a try.
That carries some risk, too, which is why another receiver in the draft would be smart.
Even Smith is realistic about the situation.
"...It?s a long season. Guys get hurt," he said in the story. "So you can never have enough quality players."
